adopted in the counties of korthumberlmd and durham the theit from the sheriff s office at cobourg of sheets containing one thousand signatures to the petition was an audacious deed which renders it impossible for a vote to be taken before the end of the present vear the indignation of the pro- motets may he more easilv imagined than described esquesmg fall show the annual exhibition of esqaesing agn cultural societv sa held at georgetown last fndaj earh m the morning the prospects for a fine day were anything hut promi but the weather soon cleared up and the afternoon proved faultless as we predicted the extraordinary success of the exhibition afr acton last vear had the effect of resflsatrag it verv considerably and the show at georgetown last fndat althocgh m manv points inferior to that of the prenooryeirr was better than any that has been held in georgetown for several ears the attendance was quite satisfactory and the number of entries was good all clashes being very fairlv represented the hall this year presented an onususlh fine ap pearance the fruit grain and roots classes were most creditable while the dis play of ladies work was such as to give the good ladies of this township a high standin for the execution of fine durable well made plain wrk and also for artistic and neatlv designed articles m fancy goods the hibition of fine arts proved that both ladies and gentlemen are devoting considerable tune and careful study to this pleasant and actzactive pastime the show- of stock was very good and would do credit to any township the display of horses was especially fine and tht of cattle and sheep folly up to the average in poultry a fine exhibit was made quite a number of the prizes for horses and sheep were captured by rest dents of acton and vicinity the band contest was the centre of at traction to manv during the afternoon three bands were entered for competition acton notxal and georgetown and some really fine music was produced xnrval band succeeded in winning the red ticket and although we feel that acton band is very seldom obliged to take any but first place we certainly think the ivorval boy a honestly earned ttieir laurels on this occa- sion this band had with them an excel lent band master and the members all did their parts well acton however labored under a disadvantage as their bandmaster was unavoidlv absent and one of the lead ing hams was oblidged to take his part which naturally made considerable differ ence in the playing played very nicely for a young baud but we hope they were not sufiiciently presump tions to expect a prize when acton and jk orval were m the contest we must con gratulate the korval boys upon their suc cess for years they have competed with acton but until last friday never succeeded in winning first place and they nownatur ally consider there victory an achievement of no mean merit take all in all tle fair was really agood one and we believe the officers feel proud and justly so over its success the show will of course be held in acton again next year and we have so doubt our citizens wul dotheir utmost to make it a grand success our tsnks are due to the painstaking secretary
