Mr. Boislard said that the family saved only a few of their posses- sions before being forced out. They were given temporary shelter in the old St. Patrick's school, now owned by Bob Miller junior. The Cobalt Kiwanis donated groceries. Firemen were aided by the ample supply of water available in Cobalt Lake. The Bucke pumper, Cobalt auxiliary pumper, Cobalt No. two truck, and four auxiliary pumps from the Ontario depart- ment of Lands and Forests at Latchford, drew water from the Lake. The main Cobalt fire engine worked from hydrants on Lang Street. Firemen feared that the build- ings would topple back on 'to the MacArthur Mining Machinery Building and the ONR 'spur line. kept the top of the buildings- washed down 'to extin- guish sparks and flying debris. Across Lang Street, Carl Oster- berg was kept busy keeping the top of Martin's store free from sparks. Only one vacant lot separated the burning buildings from the Dami- ani grocery store. Mayor Fulton Purdy said the town owed a debt of gratitude to the firemen for.a remarkably well done job. '"'Bucke, the department of lands and forests, and our own volunteers as well as many private citizens fought the fire skillfully and with determination," he said. Former Mayor John Damiani whose grocery store was threaten- ed, added his words of praise. "T thought we were goners for sure," he said. 'All the firemen were wonderful." Guide Company At Gillies Lake | Twelve members of the First Haileybury Guide Company enjoy- ed a week-end camp at Mr. and Mrs. Wilfrid Gibson's summer cot- tage at Gillies Lake. The girls at- tending included Jeanne Kranze, Annabelle Scott, Linda Gibson, Valeri Orr, Sparky Blackwell, Gayle Gibson, Heather Pearson, Anne Bryson, Connie Blair, Dianne Sadler, Linda Taylor and Lynn Hargrave. Mrs. David Herbert was in charge of the camp, assisted by Mrs. W. Taylor and Mrs. W. Gib- son. The work done at camp pro- vided the girls with a number of points for their point card. Both the Guides and their lead- ers are very appreciative of the kindness of Mr. and Mrs. Gibson for the use of their cottage and truck to take the equipment down. Their thanks for transportation goes to Mr. Andy Scott, Mr. W. Taylor, Mrs. F. A. Orr and Mr. D. Herbert.
