Northern Lights Welcome Visifors Visitors from Cobalt Lodge were welcomed by the Noble Grand, Mrs. Buia Lathem, when Northern Lights Rebekah Lodge held their meeting on May 3. j The visiting committee reported very little sickness among the members, with only one card sent "land one hospital visit made. An invitation was received from the Englehart Lodge to attend a social evening there on Thursday, May 18. A donation of a new piano stool was made to the lodge. An impressive service was held to dedicate the altar cloth, pillow and Bible marker, given by Mrs. Florence Berry in memory of her mother, Mrs. Miriam Bonin. This was followed by a re-consecration service. Mrs. A. J. Brown thanked the members who took part in the service. Red Shield Appeal Conducted in May Robert McGill, chairman of the Salvation Army's. annual Red Shield Appeal, which is being con- ducted during the month of May, feels that there is every evidence of a successful campaign. It is hoped that the response will be generous as 20 per cent of all receipts will be retained for welfare work in the town and area. Poppleton, Spanish; Mr. and Mrs. Shartner, Gowganda, Mrs. Graham and daughter Muriel of Toronto. John E. Johnston Funeral services were held from the Buffam Funerai Chapel for John E. Johnston, a pioneer resi- dent of Cobalt, who passed away recently at his home on the Nipis- sing property. Born on Anticosti Island, Mr. Johnston was in his eightieth year. He came to Cobalt fifty years ago and was employed as mine super- intendent at the Nipissing Mine for forty years. His wife, the former Evelyn Bates, predeceased him in - 1939, also a daughter, Mrs. Russell Le- mon, in 1929.
