Her birthday party last Wednes- day evening was a delightful, spon- taneous affair, informal and sin- cere, which brought out, very clearly, many of the behind the scenes services, far beyond the call of duty, that Miss Rice has been doing, quietly and unobstru- sively, for many years, for those with whom she came in contact. A particularly pleasing feature of the program was the singing of | the choir from Holy Cross School | _ in Haileybury, in both French and English. The song they sang was a | special tribute to Miss Rice, com- posed by Sister Jean du Calvaire, the principal of the school, and here is the English version of it: "On this happy evening, This happy evening, Our melodies Soar up towards Heaven Yes, towards Heaven In rhapsodies We ask for your happiness For all your kindness May God grant always And give you in many ways Your heart's desire at The Tri-Towns, always Here and there and everywhere From one town to another Testing, nursing, sympathizing Call on us to follow." My acquaintance with Miss Rice began in her training days at the Alfred Sauve Funeral services were held from Holy Cross Church, Thursday, Feb- ruary 23, at 10 a.m. for Alfred Sauve, well-known citizen of the town, whose death occurred in Mis- ericordia Hospital on Monday, February 20, following an illness of three weeks. The funeral mass was in charge of Rev. C. Lapointe. Born in Point Fortune, 84 years ago, Mr. Sauve spent his early life there and later went to Warren, near Sudbury, where he was married on January 7, 1906, to the former Miss Laurentine Proulx. Twenty-five years later they came with their family to Haileybury. Mr. Sauve farmed while at War- ren and also in the West Road area near Haileybury. He also worked as a construction foreman. He is survived by his wife, eight sons, Romuald, New Liskeard; Marcel, Noranda; Gerald, Cobalt; Ernest, Laurence, Lionel, Fernand and Rheal, all of Haileybury; and five daughters, Rose (Mrs. James Whelan), Haileybury; Ida (Mrs. R. Demers), Timmins; Alice (Mrs. Paul Rochon), Bourlamacque, Que.; Irene (Mrs. Peter Allard), North Bay; and Florence (Mrs. Joseph Velleneuve), Creighton Mines. Also surviving are 65 grand- children and nine great grand- children. Two sons predeceased him, Ted, who died in 1952 and Rene, in 1960. : Mr. Sauve was the last surviv- ing member of his family. Acting as pall-bearers were his eight sons. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery. Tell some people you can't get along without them and before long Que., |: Lady Minto, where my husband's sister, Olive McDonald, was also in training. And my personal wishes for many more years of service and enjoyment go to her with the old Scottish greeting, '"'Lang may your lum reek," which, being Scot- tish, she will understand, even if the Sessenachs do not. Who, Me? "You watch the man who drives ahead, And the man who drives behind. You watch to the right, You watch to the left, You drive with a calm, clear mind. But the man you really have to watch : On the highway, you will find, Is the man behind the man ahead, And ahead of the man behind."' Former Cobalter Represenis Guides Mrs. J. C. Crawford has received word that her niece, Miss Mary Hallett of Bracebridge, formerly of Cobalt and well known in Hail- eybury, has been appointed Guider- in-Charge of a Girl Guide Camping Party which will represent Canada at the Four Winds International Camp in Finland this summer. Leaving by boat in mid-July, the party of six will spend six weeks on the trip. Others are an assist- ant Guider and four girls from across Canada. The choice of Miss Hallett for this responsible position is~an in- dication of the esteem she enjoys in the ranks of Guiding. In Brace- bridge she has been Captain of the First Guide Company since 1954 Leaders Needed For District RCA At the February meeting of the Tri-Town and District Association For Retarded Children held earlier this week, Charles Abel, chairman of the nominating committee, pre- sented a partial slate of officers for 1961. Mr. Abel has experienced some difficulty in recruiting sufficient persons to complete the slate and and organized the First Brownie Pack there. In addition she has been of valuable assistance in the Georgian Bay area in training new leaders and in camping. Four years ago she was one of the lead- ers at the World Camp held in Doe Lake. hhas sent out an appeal to mem- bers of the Association and to the general public to allow their nantes -- to stand. Association President, Mrs. Charlton Taylor, reported that the date of the conference and annual meeting of the Ontario Association for Retarded Children in Toronto will be April 28 and 29th. It is hoped that someone from the lo- cal Association will be able to at tend. ' The annual meeting of the Tri- Town association will be held in the Banquet Hall at the Commun- ity Hall on Monday,. March 20, and will feature installation of of- ficers and annual reports of the. retiring executive.
