J. acdonald..- é At the sdme time the bank "is dope a' Standard type face for ts signature Some time ago - several leading nadian designers were invited to ISeHSS dreating an appropriate Ps thiol for the bank. The project fwas finally placed in the hands sot Allan R, Fleming, Toronto. Mr. Fleming was asked to see , which is Khe bank's cable address, could be raated as a symbel and if not to pevelop a recommended aiterna- ive: and he was, also asked to Biggest an accompanying type face that old be used; for the. bank! s hame. From a design point of view, the sroblem was to create a symbol that iw6uld: peflect the two diverse | bspects of The Bank of Nova Sco- hia -- the stable, secure, tradition- Al vphasaeter of aan international Janking institution, nearing the Pentury and a half mark, and the m qginative,, progressive spirit that narks the bank's approach to mod- brn banking needs. Both these Hualities are embodied in the!' new Beotiabank design. The word "'Sco- ia'? appears in ca traditional let Ferform, an 18th Century "Round- xand" style, perhaps better known hs 'Spencerian Script'. This style Pomes directly from the main- Ktream of foanking and in fact is Fer 'the contempor, ary form, used in the word '"'bank", a new type- style was designed, based on the magnetic: ink figures used in the mechanized cheque processing that will soon become standard in the banking field. The new *Synrbol. will genen ally be seen with. the bank's signature in fairly close: 'proximity ; and therefore |the! type'. face for the bank's naine had to be one which would "ldck -well -with 'Scotiabank. The type selected is 20th Century Bold; which has clean, neadable; modern tines. The new symbol and sinnatird will. be, introduced, into advertis- ing, 'proniretional jitenature, and outdeor signs, and will often be in¢otporated into the design of bank forms, | Mrs. A.
