Cubs Take Dump New le Cubs swamped the Second place Holy, Name Irish 10 - 4 in a scheduled game at the - Memorial Arena last Friday ev- ening and moved into a five-point lead in the Kirkland and District Hockey League. Terry Vail, out of action since before Christmas, swung back into the scoring lead with five goals and two assists. This is the third time this year that Vail has count- ed five in one game, and they have all been against his cousins, Holy Name Irish. He is also the first player to reach 40 goals this year, and also the first to reach this total in the league since 1958. His record this year so far is 40 goals and 28 as- sists. Denis Larouche, who was-~lead- ing scorer when the game start- ed, picked up five assists, but no goals. He has a sharp 67 points for the. season. Billy White, up from the Midgets for this 'game scored the first counter for the Cubs, and looked good doing it. Cubs picked up two more during the period, with Bel- anger getting the second and Vail starting off on his big night. - Savage and Cain counted for the Trish, who trailed by one goal at the end of the first stanza. Holy Name tied the count in less that.a minute, after the teams re- turned to the ice, and it took the Cubs eight minutes before they could get that one back. Fern Bel- anger pulled the trigger on- this one. Peter Grant lugged the puck from behind: the blue line, and whipped a 30 footer past Bonney to move the Cubs in front with what proved to the winning goal. John Haines picked up the in- surance goal after five minutes of play when he caught the top corn- er with a Vail, Larouche relay. Vail picked 'up a one inning. hat trick in 'the next four minutes, eased up for a breather and then counted another. Somewhere in the middle, Antoniazzi scored for the Trish. _ The first period 'was almost free of penalties, Conlin was the only one who caught the eye of the referee in 20 minutes of play. In the second period Irish offended five times and Liskeard two. , In the third period MacDonald and Grant traded punches and were tagged with majors, and started a procession-to the sin bin, Liskeard picked up: eight minors and the Trish three. Neither the Roman cal- endar nor its successor, the Julian coincided with a true year. As time went on -confusion resulted. It was not removed un- til Pope Gregory intreduced his calendar in 1582 and 'established the year at 365 days 5 hours 49 minutes and 12 seconds. However, England did not adopt this calen- 'dar until 1752 and when it came Linto force eleven days had to be .dropped to make it work. Thursday, January 26, 1961 The Haileyburian Page 3 Alimak Raise Climber Shown at CIMM Meet The Cobalt Branch of the Cana- dian Institute of Mining and Mefal- lurgy held its regular monthly meeting in the Haileybury Legion Hall on the evening of January 19, 1961. Thirty-five members were in attendance. - Mr. H. G. Pickard, vice-chair- man, conducted the meeting as the branch chairman, Mr. J. E. Arm- strong was absent due to illneess. The meeting was brought to order at 8:30 p.m. and secretary H.'O. Johnson read the minutes of the previous meeting. Mr. J. D. Frey proposed that the minutes be adopted as read and Mr. C. Cam- sell seconded the motion. Motion unanimously carried. Mr. J. D. Frey introduced the guest speaker, Mr. T. M. Childer- hose, who is vice-president and sales manager of Mine Equipment Go tLtd: : Mr. Childerhose gave a very iin- teresting illustrated talk about a comparatively new minipg ma- chine called the Alimak Raise Climber. This machine was intro- duced into Canada from Sweden in 1959 by Mine Equipment Co. The Raise Climber is driven by two air motors and trails an air hose which automatically winds or unwinds on a reel as the machine descends or ascends a raise. The machine climbs a rigid mast which is bolted to the arise wall at the rate of 40 feet per minute and descends at about 60 feet per min- ute. The miners ride in a small cage which is suspended under the plat- form and go through a trap-door onto the top of the platform to scale and rill off the raise round. Air and water lines for drilling and blowing smoke after a blast are carried as in integral part of the mast. Mining companies using this ma- chine have had very good results costwise and the Raise Climber is finding increasing favour among Canadian mines. Mr. A. B. Stothart thanked the speaker on behalf of the attend- 'ture Mr. ing members and as there was no further business vice-chairman Pickard adjourned the meeting and refreshments were served. The next branch meeting will be held.on February 17 and will fea- Gordon Bragg, Field Geologist, of Upper Canada Mines Ltd, as speaker.
