The Canadian Players by ANNE CGLSON Canadian touring actors, the Canadian Players, are returning once more to the stage of Hail- eybury High School. The company will be arriving on January 14, 1961, with. the two productions, the Caucasian Chalk Circle, by Bertholt Brecht, and the Tempest, by William Shakespeare. For the first time in North America, audiences outside the major cities will be able to see a work by the controversial mod- ern playwright, Bertholt Brecht. The Canadian Players' presenta- tion of the Caucasian Chalk Circle will be the first time any com- pany has taken one of Mr. Brecht's works on tour. This controversial and brilliant writer first present- ed the Chalk Circle in Berlin in 1954 at his own theatre. Bertholt Brecht, who died in 1956, is now being recognized as the greatest of modern play- wrights. His erratic and rebellious career was marred by clashes 'with idealogical governments and he lashed out at all forms of dic- tatorship and intimidation. The Chalk Circle, one of his last six completed plays, is a simple humorous dramatic satire, and has been likened to the best plays of Shaw. It is a play which presents and represents a great emotional con- tent, without becoming involved in an interior sense, so it is able to comment upon the emotional con- tent -it contains. There are two distinct parts to the play, each telling the same story from a_ different point of view. - In the first part, the country is in revolt and everything is in chaos. The ruler and his wife are escaping and the ruler's child is left behind. Grupche, a peasant girl employed in the household, saves the child at enormous cost to herself. She travels hundreds of miles, starves, risks her own life, sacrifices her own love, so that the child can be safe, and eventually is as dedicated to the boy as if' he were her own. The second part tells the story of the same era from a different point of view. In this, a drunken scribe is made a judge by the army--a symbol of constant pow- er throughout all kinds of chaos and crises. The life of the country is reflected here in a number of seenes of different trials which: the judge conducts.
