Everyone likes to savor a first once in a while; the first straw- berry, the first ear of sweet corn, the song of. the first robin, and, maybe, the first cry of your first- born. And so, when Clarence Connelly offered. me the first northern On- tario ride in a 1961 Impala Chev- rolet I dropped my pencil and my inclination to work and headed for his plant . . . at the bridge in New Liskeard. The new and shining vehicle had just been rolled off the carrier, gassed and licensed plated when I arrived, and after a glance at the sleek, . sans-fintailed, beauty, we were ready to take off. My first impression was one of surprise, I got into the front seat without knocking off a kneecap, Chat silly; narrow. bottom of the !door was missing . . . lots of leg 'room, and my felt hat wasn't crushed down over my eyes, as it 'has been since they lowered the roofs of cars . . . somehow or othb- er there was room for my hat, my head, and my broad beam, a tri- 'umph in engineering, if there ever was one. We wheeled away from the shop. Up Highway 11, over the bridge, and out into Dymond Township, and I was reminded of a ride I had many years ago in one of the highest priced cars then produced. The action of the car was some- thing like that of a canoe floating on a lake with modest sized rollers slightly, bending the surface, no pounce, no jounce, no jar, just an easy, pleasant rolling motion, that didn't change even when we darted 'off into one of our turbulent side- roads. After enjoying the sensation of a pleasant, smooth ride, I started to look around to see what else was 'offered by GMC in its new model ... and there was plenty. The steering wheel had no sup- ports to mask the: compact dials on the glareless aluminum panel, and there were luxury type handles for easy opening of the doors. Even the trunk of the car was different, the spare tire was well up in front, and so were the tools, leaving plenty of room for lug- gage. And, to top it off, instead of bare metal, the inside of the trunk atone. There were many more features, but you'll have to, look for yourself, I can't remember them all. ~~ was attractively painted with Rox-: Planting Tips For Hardy Bulbs Spring-flowering bulbs give the first welcome traces of colour af- ter the long, drab- winter. But they must be planted / properly first. - Here. are-a few tips from the tario Department of Agriculture to help get your bulbs off to a good start: Bulbs do well in an* average, neutral or slightly alkaline garden soil. If the soil tends to be clayey, add sand and organic matter to open it up; and earlier application of manure corrects a dry, sandy soil. Depth? This varies: here are suggested depths for a few of the more' common bulbs: Tulip, 8'; Daffodil, 9'; Hyacinth, 5'; Cro- cus, A". j These depths are for average sized bulbs. Use your own judg- ment as to how deep your bulbs should be planted. Spacing de- pends on such factors as height, arrangement and purpose of the blooms. Formal tulip beds show nicely when the bulbs are planted about eight inches apart. Don't plant bulbs in spots that are known to be extremely wet in the spring. Add a layer of sand below the bulb in areas where drainage is only fair. As a rule, bulbs do not need fer- tilizer. Many gardeners apply a bit of bonemeal to help in the for- mation of new bulbs. When the ground freezes, three or four inches of mulch above the bulbs offers good winter protec- tion. Remove it as soon as growth starts in the spring. When spring comes, it's a good idea to give.a thorough watering just before and after the blooming season. ; 2 . Classified Ads Bring Results Phone OS 2-5202 Haileybury REPAIR | BEN J.
