Three North Bay youths were taken into custody and are lodged in Haileybury jail. Robert Whiteduck, John Ranger and Bernard MacDonald _ face charges of car theft, of breaking, entering and theft. Constables Dave Paul and Bill Tinney were on patrol through New Liskeard when they saw the three youths getting into the late model car and approached to in- vestigate. The young men took off at high speed through New Liskeard and a chase followed at speeds that reached and exceeded 100 m.p.h., according to police. The driver of the stolen car tried to ditch the police car by swinging back and forth across the road as the police attempted to bring it to a stop. A road block was set up at the Englehart bridge by Cosntable Jim Burns of the Englehart division of the OPP and a similar one was ar- ranged by the Kirkland Lake de- tachment. But the young driver anticipated such a manoeuver and turned off the highway as the car entered Earlton and entered the stock yards near the ONR lines. Break-in HAILEYBURY -- Provincial Police here are investigating a break-in at the plant of Moris- sette Diamond Drilling. A burglar alarm called police to the plant early Thursday morning, but the thieves es- caped. They used equipment stolen out of the machine shop to drill into the company's vault, but were foiled by the arrival of police. OPP Constable G. Ford and Sgt. J. Tappenden are investigating. Haileybury Juniors At North Tourney Murray Black and John Horn- castle, two of the. junior. players from the Haileybury Golf Club, were in Sudbury last week to play in the Northern~Ontario Golf As- sociation Tournament. Murray placed second in the "B" Group, 15 years and under with a score of 338, just one point behind the winner, Ziggy Nowakel- vitch of Timmins who turned in a score of 337. John played several rounds but did not complete. the course. The winner of the senior '"'A"' Group was Sandy McAndrew of e Sudbury-Copper Cliff Club: unner-up was Bruno Guarda of Timmins. A number of Kirkland Lake Juniors played in Class "C", 18 years and under, and one in Class "B*. There were 51 -entries - in the tournament, 20 of them in Murray's class, 15 years and under. The local boys were driven to Sudbury by Mr. Horncastle and re- turned with Charles Camsell who attended the tournament following a business trip to North Bay. ton Stockyard The car finally hit a pile of rail- way ties and skidded into a hydro pole. The young people were un- hurt and were arrested as they piled out of* the slightly damaged car. In the car trunk were cigarettes, chocolate bars, money, pop and an electric power drill. These ar- ticles were stolen earlier from a Latchford Garage. The car was re- ported stolen in North Bay. The arrested men will appear in the magistrate's court in Hailey- bury on Friday. Suspend Tax Collector Cobalt's tax collector was suspended by the Town Council at a special Council meeting Monday afternoon. An audit of the tax records is now being conducted by Kemp and Kemp of New Liskeard. At the regular meeting Tues- day evening, Mayor Fulton Purdy stated that the Council's action was taken after Town Clerk Cyril Vezina had brought certain matters to the atten- tion of the Council . "A thorough audit is being held, and it would be improper for the Council to make any further statements or comment in any way until this is com- pleted,' the Mayor said. "However, the Council is ap- preciative of the vigilance. ex- ercised by Mr. Vezina,' he said. Candore Explorations Has Encouraging Finds Evidence that the New Liskeard area may one day become another Cobalt as far as mining is concern- ed, continues to pile up as more companies explore the ground sur- rounding the already rich Langis mine on the road to Judge. Armstrong celebrated their fif- tieth wedding anniversary on Sun- day, July 3, when they were 'At Home" to their friends and rela- tives at a reception held in the 1.0.0.F. Hall, Cobalt. Prior to going to the hall their family of two sons and three daughters enjoyed a turkey dinner with their parents. Mr. Armstrong was- born in Quyon, Que., 72 years ago, and is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Tom Armstrong. His family moved to Nipissing, Ont., and then in the very early days of the Silver Town, came to Cobalt. ; There he met his bride, the form- er Isabel¥2 MacDougall, the daugh- ter of Mr. and Mrs. Dougall Mac- Dougall of Manitowaning, Manitou- lin. Island. They were married there on July 6, 1910. Both Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong are active in Church and Lodge. They. are .both members of St. Golf Match Another pleasing evidence of co-operation between the three district towns is the substan- tial boost the Haileybury Golf Club is giving to the New Lis- keard and District Hospital's financial campaign for the erection of a Nurses' Resi- dence. The Club has arranged for a match between Al. Balding and Bob Gray, top Canadian pre's and 'two of -Nerthern Ontari0's best amateur players, Dave and Bill Morland. The Haileybury Club and the players have donated their services in a good cause, and the $1.00. fee. charged to see the game will move the fund closer to the $50,000 objective. Anniversary James' Anglican Church, where Mrs. Armstrong is a member of the Women's Auxiliary and Mr. Arm- strong served for fifteen years as Minister's Warden. He is also a member of the Odd- fellows and a Mason, Superintend- ent of the Chapter Degree in the Masonic Order, Cobalt Lodge and Past Preceptor of the Preceptory in Haileybury Masonic Lodge, and also a member of Inspiration L.O.L. No. 3242, North Cobalt, for a long time. He retired in Janu- ary of this year as Town Foreman. An active member of Silver Re- bekah Lodge, Mrs. Armstrong is also a member of Shuniah Chapter O.E.S. and a Past President of Bonnie Doon Camp.. D.O.S. They have three daughters, Irene, (Mrs. M. Mortson of Swas- tika), Alma (Mrs. Les. Steele of Cobalt), Gloria, (Mrs. Art Easey of North Bay); two sons, Hugh of Virginiatown, and Meredith of Fer- gus. There is also twelve grand- children and one great grandchild. During the tea in the afternoon catered by St. Jame's W.A. many guests and relatives from the Tri- Town area, Swastika, Kirkland Lake, Englehart, North Bay, Fal- conbrige, Fergus and Port Credit attended and wished the happy couple many more years of happi- ness together. The tea table was lovely with its ecru lace cloth, candlebra with tall gold. tapers and centrepeice of golden mums and yellow tulips. Mrs. W. Lonsdale and Mrs. J. Smith poured and guests were served by four granddaughters, Mrs. Sylvia Mortson, Mrs. B. J. Mortson, Mrs. Clara Mortson and Miss Judy Mortson. Mr. and Mrs. Armsrtong were recipients of a 'Pot of Gold' from the family, numerous other gifts and several bouquets of flowers. Each received a piece of luggage from the Rebekah and Oddfellow Lodges. Fay Bigelow and Pat Slaght of Cobalt were the winners of the ur | ' ga Z, Ui. Club 60 sponsored ma last week. The couple were the last of eight couples who started the dance on Wednesday at 8 p.m. at 4 am.
