Close to 60 rinks were entered in the 'spiel,» with. quartettes from Temagami,. Englehart, Elk Lake, Liskeard and Haileybury pantici- pating. The first event, for Bulova watches, donated by Lavery Jew- elers, was won by Cliff Binkley's Liskeard rink in a close tussle with the Bill Grozelle rink from Haileybury, who received the Hill- Clark-Francis prizes. Prizes donat- ed by Reid's Men's Wear and the Windsor Hotel were won by Clay- ton Dunn and Ron Morissette, both of Haileybury. The Temiskaming Speaker event was won by the George Harrison rink from Haileybury and the de- feated finalists, skipped by Clare Neil took prizes donated by Tem- iskaming Hardware, Moore's Lug Store prizes. went to third spot winner, Bob Scott of Englehart, who edged Hubert Dor- an of Haileybury. Prizes for fourth place in this event were donaited by New Liskeard Hotel. Gordon Ross' rink were tops in the third event, taking the Wm. Pollock and Sons. prizes, second spot went to T. Welch of Hailey- bury and his team is now wearing hats donated by McKnight's Men's Wear. Don McKnight was in third place and collected the Northern Telephone prizes and Spencer and Sullivan's donation went to G. Em- erick of Englehart. Chiff Krick's rink were winners Six Tweenies - Now Enrolled An enrollment held by the Brownie Pack, United Church. The six Tweenies who were en- rolled were pleased to have their parents present.. The following were enrolled and are now Brow- nies; Patricia Harrison, Irene Ken- rick, Susan Harrison, Shirley Ann Cote, Sigrid Valtin, Betty Treen. Mrs. H. Doran, the Division Commissioner of the Girl Guide As- sociation, was present to enroll the girls. Inspection was held, with every girl in her uniform looking trim and neat. This took place in the form of a compass, the -Brownie Sixers facing North, South, East and West, with the Brownies lined up behind their leaders. The Commissioner gave a talk on the aims and objects of the Brownie work and followed this by presenting prizes to the Brownies who had sold the largest number of cookies in the recent Girl Guide Cookie Sale. First prize, Jean. Kranz with 62 boxes. sold;. second, Shirley Ann Cote, 43 boxes; third, Donelda Mc- Intyre, 31 boxes; fourth, Sandra Mattice, 26 boxes. The Pack sold 378 boxes altogether. Now all curlers can rest their sweeping arms until next November when once again the curling jackets will be. taken out of mothballs, Successful Year At Curling Club The Cobalt - Haileybury Curling as Club had another successful sea- son under the chairmanship of Clayton Dunn and William V. . Fleming as vice-president. The , men's club held their membership around the 142 mark, whereas the ladies had an increase to a total of 101 members. On Saturday, April 9, the closing event took place and the prizes for the differ- ent events during the season were presented. Walter Hylands did a good job on the draws and kept all members happy and deserves a great deal of credit for his effi- cient handling of the draws. In the opening event the team skip- ped: by Connie Vachon won first prize and Ernest St. Louis' team took second, P. M. Fleming who donated the prizes for the P.M. Fleming event presented the following winners, Clarence Tyson (skip) Heber Bri- den, Jack Leishman and C, Wil- mont. Second prize was won by Gordon Stevens (skip) James Hicks, T. M, Crandell and Paul Haack. In the Don Russell Mem- orial event the following were the winners, William Grozelle (skip), Ted Kenrick, Glen Moody and Len Johnston. McAulay was not present to pre- sent the prizes which were donated by his firm so R. J. Fleming did the honours and the winners were Ernest §t.
