Sy THURS., NOV. 21st, .1957 Firemen Answer Call Sunday Night A Haileybury house was ser- iously damaged by fire Sunday ~night and an empty farm house at Mileage 104 was destroyed in another blaze. Fire Chief Ken Watson of Haileybury said he believed the fire in the residence of Jini Rose, dn the Lakeshore Road, had been burning for six to eight hours. before the fire de- partment was called. A passing motorist turned in the alarm. The Haileybury vol- unteers fought the fire for more than three hours. Fire Chief Watson said the fire started when the flue door of an oil furnace flew out. The fire worked its) way through the walls and up into the attic. The entire residence suffered severe smoke, water and heat damage. About the same time, Cobalt volunteers were called to the ski club road at Mileage 104 to fight a fire that broke out in an empty house, once occupied by Z. atabie: The blaze lit up the country- side and attracted many specta- tors, as the farm house was in an area where theré are many mine and mill buildings. OBITUARY MRS. P. F. McEWEN The death occurred suddenly at her home in Cobalt on Mon- day morning November 18, of Elizabeth Weeks, wife of Peter F. McEwen. Born in Port Elmsley, Ontario she came to Cobalt shortly after her marriage, at Carleton Place in 1904 soon after the opening of the silver camp. She was Cobalt's first school teacher and was active in all phases of Community work. The McEwen home has been noted for the friendliness of the welcome extended to all who visited it, and Mrs. McEwen's personality and charm will be long remembered by friends from all parts of Canada, : Mrs. McEwen is_ survived by "her husband, one son. Dr, Ken- neth F. McEwen. Toronto, one grandson, Peter Clark McEwen and one sister, Mrs. Finley Cam- eron of Cobalt. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon with in- terment in the Haileybury cemetery. Carlin was welcomed to the Club. They made arrangements for the Christman Bazaar to be held in the Legion Lounge on Dec- ember 6th. Mrs. Keith Reid and Mrs. Cahill of the Notch and Mrs. G. Romano and Mrs. W. S. Mallett of Cobalt were asked to supervise the details for the Bazaar. They appointed a nominating committee and asked them to report at the December meeting at which the elections will be held. The Club's Bazaar held on Monday evening, was very suc- cessful and everything brought by the members was -all_ sold. A quilt which the members made during the year, was drawn for and was won by Mrsy Albert Robitaille. The ladies are Mrs. M. MacDonalds' Hound Chutes for the ber meeting. The gift of the month was a- warded to Mrs. S, Larocque. Mrs. G. Romano was late and 2nd vice Mrs. K. Reid chaired until she arrived at 9 p.m. Mrs. Gladys Lott secretary read the minutes, Mrs. M.
