The defi'nition of con- verse is "to exchange ideas," and of talk." to utter words." I read an article recently which described a number of different types of talkers. One was the boastful type, who always has something a little more expensive, whose friends are always more import- ant, and who can do almost any task a little better than anyone else. Another is the "thunder- stealer,' who always knows (and tells) the ending of your story, and who has read that new book that you are trying to tell about. in fact she has read one newer than that. A third type, like Tennyson's brook, "goes on forever," These are the people who use twenty words when five would have been quite enough. Then there are the ones who can only talk about "I, mé and mine," and there are those who pounce on an innocent statement, like a cat on a mouse, and deliver a free lecture, willy-nilly, whether you want to listen or not. 3ut there is, too, the self- Engagement Mr. and Mrs. Hector Villen- euve, Haileybury, Ont., are pleas- ed to announce the engagement of their daughter Patricia Eliza- beth to Robert George Wilson, son of Mrs. Margaret Wilson and the late Mr. Wilson of New Lis- keard, Ont. Marriage to take place on June 30th, 1956, in Hail- eybury. BORN 30rn --To Mr. and Mrs Leo Gough at - Miserecordia Hosp- ital on Tuesday, Jan. 31st 1956 a daughter. How well I remember a young chap who used to come to our home quite frequently and whose total con- versation consisted of "shore is", "shore did". and "shore. will". The only time I remember him saying anything more was one time he was feeding our horses and as he bent over the manger to push the hay down, old Bob, one of our horses who was en- dowed witha human sense of humor, reached over and grabb- ed the seat of his trousers in his teeth. Nuff said! Very little is being said about the fact that this is Leap Year. People who claim 'February 29 for their birth date will be cele- brating, no doubt, and there may bea few silly girls who con- template proposing, but other- wise it's just another day, ano- ther year. All Woman's Institute mem- bers will be looking forward to meeting their new director, Miss Helen McKercher, at the con- vention this fall. Last fall, there seemed to be something lacking from the con- vention and most members felt that it was that there was no director. Losing Miss Lewis after ten years of service cer- ny left a gap that is hard to fill. It is to be hoped, too, each branch in the north is at- tempting to secure new mem- bers in order to build up the provincial membership that suf- fered a decrease. last year. If each branch the province would secure even three new members it would mean that we would not only get back the members we have lost but would give us a good increase as well. Isn't it wonderful to think that spring will soon be here. even if we did have a grand winter? "Hope springs eternal in the human breast,' and again I have ordered pansy and double in petunia seed and will be soon planting them in a flat in the basement window as soon as they arrive. My African violets have balk- ed on me this year and all winter not one blossom have I had on them. They are strong and heal- thy looking but nary a bud app- ears. Oh, well, they may perk tp soon.
