' THE HAILEYBURIAN THURSDAY, AUGUST 11, 1955 pose Two - THE HAILEYBURIAN Founded by C. C. Farr in 1904 Every The Broadway Issued Thursday Haileyburian St., from Office Haileybury, Ont JOHN HUNT Publisher. Newspapers Member Canadian Weehly Assn. Authorized as Second-Class Mail, Post Office Department, Ottawa In Canada: $2.50 per year, in advance In United States 3.50 per year in advance EDITORIALS The joys and griefs of a small town newspaper are a little dif- ferent to those experienced by our big city conireres. lor ex- ample, for the past couple of weeks the masthead at the top of this column has been the single line, founded by C. C. Farr. This of course. has_ started rumors that the editor is asham- ed to put his name on the sheet, or that it is a sinister develop- ment, indicating that the Hailey- burian is going to be sold to one of the newspaper chains that is notorious for snapping up pap- ers and turning them into brarich offices of their Toronto head- quarters. Nothing could be further from the truth. What happened was that we were short of staff, and away behind schedule, The editor came,in late one evening to help the printer. Determined to show the printer that he, too, could make up a page, he picked up the tiny jumble of metal that makes up the masthe ad T here was a loud crash and the masthead landed on the floor in fifty pie- ces of scattered type. The print- er looked at the editor. The edi- tor looked at the printer, and then beat a hasty retreat to the safety of the front office Of course, we should have re- set it, but the paper was a day late then, so we said skip it. Then we closed down for a week, and when we_ reopened, we found that the painters had spla- shed the seven point magazine. We should have cleaned it out and set our masthead, but a social club wanted some tickets in a hurray, so we put service (and business) ahead of pride, and let it go again. a ee By the time this editorial is in print. we may have reset the masthead above this column. On the other hand, if the editor tries to help the printer much more often the column may not be printed either. Another axiom of the weekly newspaper is that if an error is going to creep into the paper, or a printing job, the word mis- spelled is always the one word that can ruin a whole sentence. If someone makes a mistake on a printing job, it's never on Major Baloney Hoople's letter- heads, which we won't get paid for anyway, but on something for our most valued customer. If a social note is lost, its bound to be the one that some- one went to a lot of trouble to bring into the office. If there's a mistake in an ad, it's nearly always the date or the price. -- But. it's an interesting life. Newspaper editors are at least remarkable for few have sc many people mad at them for such a variety of reasons. HELP WANTED Seeing that we have deyoted most of our first editorial to ourselves, we might well continue the process. Currently the Haileyburian is looking fo someone to help in the office, as as Evelyn Larabie who has helpec out during the recent change- over, is going back to St Mary's Academy. What we need is some re- sponsible genius who is always neat and tidy, but doesn't min¢ qa) Temiskaming Construction Limited Phone OS 3-5702 Sudbury, Ont. THE LETTER BOX North Cobalt, August 8, 1955. The Editor, The Haileyburian, Haileybury, Ont. Dear Sir: Much has been said and written about the present fire protection situation in the town- ship of Bucke. It now appears likely that even if Haileybury offers to protect Bucke, the pre- sent council may ask the people to vote on the question. As a long term resident of North Cobalt, and one: who has played some part in Bucke's municipal affairs, I would like to appeal to the citizens of North Cobalt to vote for making an arrangement with Haileybury to protect all our township. This is one occasion when North Cobalt, which.has a,ma- jority of vote in Bucke, can show that it has the. interest, of all the township at heart. Ordinary decency :would dic- tate that we should support a measure designed to bring pro- tection to all the township, North, West, South, and North Cobalt. An arrangement with the Hai- leybury fire brigade is the only sensible solution to our prob- lems. I sincerely hope that the people of North Cobalt will sup- port the measure, together with Skinny men, women gain 5, 10, 15 Ibs. THE Reasons Why ? BY WYMAN EDEY A good friend of mine asked me, "Why on earth are you in the grocery business." Sometimes I wonder too, There are few businesses like the gro- cery business, or at least the in- dependent grocery business. e of the big attractions is that you meet a lot of people, and you get a remarkable in- insight into their lives .through this business. If Mrs. X. breaks a denture, then she'll stop buy- ing crackers for a while. Mr. Y. lived in the tropics for a time, and is .always asking for hot sauces and spices that are diffi- cult to get. An independent grocer has to watch prices Unlike once carefully. the manager of the chain store, who only carries out orders, grocers like myself stand or fall by their ability to meet chain store-prices by tough buying, haggling with salesmen, and watching the market like a hawk. Sometimes we can't meé€et chain store prices, but it is sur- prising how often we can beat them across the broad average. _ We cannot afford to run "Spec- jals" at a loss, but on the other hand, we don't add a few cents to a regular line to make up our loss on the "Special." And the independent grocer has one advantage, he gives per- sonal service, and can catef to the needs of his public. It's a tough business, but we don't think we would like to be in any other. 'By the way, with the early growing season, tomatoes are p'entiful and in good condition. I doubt if they will be any cheaper than they are at present. Until next week... __. Despite the shortage of rain, this _year's raspberrry crop has been something remarkable. 1 am sure if there had been a few showejis at the right time, eight berries would have lilled a pit basket, (almost anyway). 1 ain very tond ot them, raw or can- neu, but Taspberry jal, even the mention Of it, brings back hor- rible memories of my childhood. in those Ways, cnildren were periodically dosed with worm powders, whether they needed them or not, and | was always given mine ina _ spoonful of thick, thick, sweet raspberry jam! And always before break- fast! I can remember hiding out be- hind the woodpile, sniffling, and hoping that my mother would forget about it before she: found me. She never did!! ba san' The result is that to this day I despise raspberry jam,.and | don't believe the worm powders did me any good, either Do you ever wonder just what the words: "a small town," mean?.I read a definition of a small town, -this week, that ] thought was rather good; "A smal] town is one where, if a dog sits down in the middle of Main street to scratch a flea, the cars drive slowly around him and the dog just keeps on scra- tching." I am quite sure that definition must have been written a long time ago, because it would be a brave dog, or person, who would daré to stand, much less sit, in the middle of any street, in any town with a population of more than twenty persons, in this day and hour, lf they did, 1 would guarantee that in two minutes flat, there would bea string of cars on both sides of them and a couple of motor cycles leaping over them, horns blowing and a. few raucous voices demanding, "Hey, whaddya think yer doin' ?"
