THURS., DECEMBER: 30,' 1954 THE. HAILEYBU RIAN: Page Three That we just felt like you did... . we thought that famous wolf had four good legs and we were as pleas- ed as the farmers to learn that he was a three legged monster weigh- > ing 78 pounds . . .65 inches from tail V9) HOES 2 5 6 6 That this is getting to be the choic- est area for news . . . now if it isn't plain ordinary dogs or wolves or bush fires or gentlemen crooks, it's flying saucers .. . .imagine sitting right here on Lake Temiskaming with that little old Agaunico Mine lit up like a Christmas tree by a crew of funny little old men chew- ing Christmas cigars and shooting up and down in the sky on wedges of old Cherry Hill cheese . . . .these that viewed it seemed to think it was odd that they guided their Wedge- wood saucer around and around in circles . . .that's all we've been do- ing since somebody said there were five more shopping days . .we mean if you'd just gotten through Christ- mas dinner and all that, isn't it rea- sonable to decide to take a ride in the night air and work a little of it off... .all we can think is that if it was Christmas time and the spirit of love everlasting was really abroad how could those little old creatures of ® a3 from Mars bear to just leave John "Ta Town Travellers Club - out there in the cold and not even so much as gun the mine shaft or even whisper in those high pitched voices that are reported to have "Sorry, we can't join you, boys, there's too much oxygen down there'"' . .. darn it all, they could have drop- ped a card on the off chance that it wouldn't dissolve before it hit the ground... That Aunt Mary says that every so often she gets so mad at the tele- phone, she can't stand it . . . .some- times she goes away for while and tries to make a butterscotch pudding when all the time she is wanting to phone her list of people she wants to come in on New Year's Day... . she finally got so mad at the phone, she put a call into us. to see if ours was working properly . . . .when it was, she decided the operators did- n't like her and were doing it on pur- pose ... .Aunt Mary is very sensi- tive ....we asked her what they were doing and she said they were- n't ringing her numbers .. . .we ask- ed her how she knew and she said because she just happened to ses this particular party coming home at 4 a.m. and she knew they'd never be up and out at nine... -when we Give Out Christmas Cheer Spending $400.00 to bring Christ- mas cheer to needy families, the ACT Club of New Liskeard, Cobalt and Haileybury carried out their first big charitable project since the group started in July. With the assistance of -- the Sal- vation Army, the clergy and the local branch of the Temiskaming Health Unit, a list of families was drawn up and the Club members distributed to each home a hamper eontaining a six pound chicken, bread, butter, peas, coffee, oranges, A.C.T. MEMBERS: PACKING. HAMPERS milk, pickles, cheese, jelly -powder and Christmas cake. A full day and a half was spent by a special com- mittee packing and delivering the hampers. On the committee were Alex MacLean, Chairman, George Morgan, Bud Wynn,' Reg Fielder, Bill Bilodeau, Jack Thomson, Jeff Lamothe, Stan Tresidder, Margo Knigge and Charlie Humphrey. The Club has a membership of 25 but by the time their first birthday rolls around, they hope to have com- pleted a membership drive with an objective of 50. sound came through again, Aunt Mary said "You see, they did it on purpose, I know they did'... . That we do wish to thank all those kind people who sent Christmas greetings to this office and kind words to carry on. That businessmen report a "'sur- prisingly good turnover"' this year. . . .we think they say "surprisingly"' because there seemed to be a feel- ing abroad that Canadians were go- ing to tighten on the shopping sprees but we are still riding the crest. That these are the stories we alt like to hear at this time of the year . no sooner had some of our read- ers read of little children in the Mis- ericordia Hospital than into their Christmas came ten Laura Secord stockings . . . .a phone call for the age of every child and a gift for their Christmas tree . . . .popcorn and candy from a class at the Pub- lic School and a parcel of toys from the ACT Club . .. .and this we mur- mur at the turn of the New Year is the spirit not just for now but all the year through.... That the Christmas card we liked so very well was that which pictured a young lad in his red dressing gown and slippers singing so seriously, "Oh come On all ye faithful! .... . and speaking of cards, we like the implication of one friend who leaves her cards up until the New Year . because she is away in the holiday season and when she returns she thinks it is so nice "'to sit and visit" wiih all her friends in the less hur- riéd days of the New Year....... That it is cheers to Magistrate At- kinson for sharing the glory of his years with the home town folks« . . - down south, they have a lot of things but right now we seem+to be the envy of every Torontonian . . . .Bruce West admitted last week that the Magist- rate has a point' when he says we have much superior criminals... . _ now, we have perfect confidence that the first time we are faced with a hold-up (and we don't mean the Thursday edition) the: gentleman will doff his hat and say "Madam, would you care to go out for coffee while I clean. out the safe" ......
