Last winter, a young father told a Confederation Man: "Fred, you know how much is left of my $5,000 income after payments on my house *.. food and clothing bills... and all the other expenses. How much pro- tection can | afford for my family?" "A lot more than you think, Jim," replied the Confederation Man. "We have a plan that, on your salary, will provide for your family $10,000 in cash at death . . . and $100 every month until your daughter is 21. Then, they'll receive another $10,000. In the event of death after your daughter is 21 this plan provides $20,000 in cash. That's enough to provide a brighter future!" Boyd, Haileybury Representative since the day it was first o ~ ...children wend their way into anyone's heart at any time bu sick little children, well it's just well nigh unbearable, they look so very cute and so very sad... and then we found out that there issomething thot couldmakethem very glad .... when you're out stocking up for all kinds of toys for your favorite children, you'llbe into the right Christmas spirit if you could double up on the order and help equip this lovely, sunny wing of -your hos pital with any kind of toys for from six months to fourteen years...first donation is a dolll's house and it's meant happier days when they are sick and lie abed|. tes That music lovers will not soon forget a very talented young ar- tist, Joan Maxwell, last year's winner of "Nos Futures Etoiles" ...the charm of her personality and a voice of rich beauty made her Sunday recital at the School auditorium an exciting event. .' the audience were well aware that they were privileged to en- joy the beginning of what will be an important career .... her well chosen program showed a distinct talent far a fine inter- pretation of different languages ...In. some parts, her voice sounded like mezzo-soprano and in others soprano, although she is generally presented ag a con- tralto.... particularly in Franz Schube rt's "La Belle Meuniere", her special charm with an un- familiar language gave a beau- tiful interpretation to the thoughts of the famous German composer.' so That it seems to us that while Councilare busy passing motions to give turkeys to all the em- ployees on the payroll, some- body, as ambassador at large, maybe, should be given the au- thority to dip into the funds just ever so briefly and go shop- ping for the Councillors... hea- ven knows they deserve a little something and theyd'd be the last to vote anything for them- selves because they would be ac- cused immediately of being fri- volous when Main Street was icy and we needed more sand... we'd want this whole thing to be 'a real shock to them... if you have any ideas, get intouch with Santa Claus. oI That the Board of Education must be very happy with the handsome new light gracefully arched from the top of a_ brand new pole and beaming down on the entrance to the auditorium ..-Councillor Alex Mosher and this writer have had a good time over the long pending matter of a request from the Board some three long years ago to light the way, the best way...and by a series of eliminations of what is not satisfactory in the way of floodlights and cross-the-street bulbs, all is serene. ..every time we inched our way down the steps in the darkness, we acted like every other good citizc: wondered about the Chairman of Light....as soon as the swelling had gone down on a_ sprained ankle, up loomed Councillor Mosher working like a trojan for the Curling Club bingo sind we didn't care if the lights all went out..'like everything else it is just a matter of lightening the the darkness and going on to other things...Councillor Mosh- er finishes his first stint as a Councillor this year, for due to le pressure of business, he doe: not fee] that he can do i to the town until some future date "when" as he so nicely put it a hope the people will once again give me the privilege of serving them for no job has ever me such wholehearted satisfac- tion." sooo} That so many time, we have been driving with someone and the question was asked "What is the proper signal to give by hand when making a move at the wheel"... .it is astonishing the people who have no concep- tion of what the signal indicates and we include ourselves among Kirkland Lake District 4 Juvenile Hockey League Schedule for December 16--Lions vs. Cobalt. 16--Haileybury vs. Legion 21--Holy Name vs. Lions 23--Cobalt vs. Holy Name 23--Legion vs, Haileybury 28--Legion vs, Lions. 28--Holy Name ys. Cobalt 30--Haileybuyr vs. Legion 30--Lions ys, Cobalt, them, ... it stands to reason that if so few know the mean- ings, there are going to be ac- cidents and there are...it only takes a second to digest and it is time we all conversed in the same road language...if you drop your arm straight dow? it means vou «re slowing down with the snten'ion of coming to astop...obviously you should do this well in advance and not the very moment you spot the biggest Christmas tree in the forest to take home...you are going to turn into the farm- er's road and pick up a nice fat turkey...fine ... put a straight arm out intothe frosty air first or you may never get the carv- ing knife into the bird ... and if you are turning right with the intention of getting home safely tonight, it is up with the arm, remembering all the way that 1954 slogan What is your hurry? tte ee That tying in with the discus- sion of a holiday on January 3rd, we remind readers that the Chamber of Commerce Christ- mas Closings call for a holiday on January Ist, 2nd and 3rd. reese That we phoned the Postmast- er to ask him what you put on those unsealed Christmas cards and the answer is anywhere in the world for 2c...even to Chi- na, Mr. Cooke says, if you have any friends there so we forbid anyone else to phone and con- fuse us on postage. IK That here and there, we can see glowing signs that our good citizens are going to lighten ond } bigiaten the town with gay lights outdoors that will do justice to the lovely white month of De- cember .,. it doesn't really take so much time... just a little thought and a little effort and you may be the winner too of the Chamber of Commerce's Ist prize of $15.00, 2nd prize of $10.00 or third prize of $5.00. FRET That we like the story of the little lady who was trying so very hard to do the right thing ...her mother had drilled her beautifully on how to behave and then to say. "I thank you from the bottom of my heart'....so off she went to a party and as her mother sat and beamed with joy over a perfect behaviour, her ardent pupil blurted out to her hostess "I thank you from my bottom to my heart".
