Many a tired editor has com- mented that if all the people sending out tripe for free pub- licity spent the same amount ot money on paid ads, they and the papers would do a lot better. The latest piece of nonsense to cross our dest is from CKGN LV at North Bay. The station proudly announces that it is now staging live wrestling shows inside its own studio. The one and a-half hour show 1s sponsored by. MacDonald Beve- rages of North Bay. Wrestling, we suppose, is the only live talent that MacDonalds would support, and we hope this is called, into the scene. We admire Sam's courage and enterprise, but as an old fashion- ed beer toper, we shudder at the thought of consuming an Amer- ican brew out of a plastic bottle. We have too many happy mem- ories of hot summer afternoons in the Kentish countryside, where mine host drew foaming mugs from wooden casks, and the aroma of hops lay heavy on the air. A good mug of English beer, a slice of home baked bread, anda chunk of strong flavoured cheese. What else could a man want. Now we have to settle for Schiltz or Pabst or some other heathen concoction, served from a tin can, or even worse; a non-returnable plastic bottle. And soon the relative merits of Pink Ladies, Whiz-Bangs or Whisky Sours will become polite conservation in town if the wets win the cocktail vote. We con- fess we prefer the old days when a gentleman drank his rye or scotch with water or soda, and one's estimate of an- other's character was in some measure decided by his taste and capacity. In fact, with all these new fangled ideas, we propose to form an association for the pro- tection of old fashioned im- bibers, We'll brew our own, ban all women from taking part, and guzzle quietly in the Hail- eyburian's basement, a nuisance to none and a haven for those type locomotive was chosen as representative of the steam engines which opened up the famous mining fields of Cobalt, Kirkland Lake and Timmins, and the fertile farm and forest land between these points. On board the special train will be officials of the Ontario government, railway officials and representatives of the dist- rict and national press, radio and television. : Railway officials said that a detailed itinarary of the trip would be announced in the near future when final plans for the tour have been worked out, The Letter Box To The Editor, The Haileyburian, Dear Sir: On behalf of the Haileybury Home and School Association, I would like to express our sin- cere thanks to The Haileyburian for their co-operation in public- izing our monthly activities. We feel this method of public izing our work increases the in- terest and attendance of parents, considerably. Mrs. McDonald, in particular, has been most helpful to us. Sincerely yours, Mrs. G. N. Standing, Secretary, Haileybury Home and School Association. THE ROTARY WHEEL When the Haileybury Rotary Club held their weekly luncheon Monday noon, Dr. W. R. Somer- ville and Carm J. Donegan were appointed as delegates to repre- sent the Club at the district meeting of the Crippled Child- ren's Society being held at Northwood Camp on June 1. Sam Hughes reported that the attendance . had been _ slightly lower at the last wrestling bout which had been unfortunate as it had been an excellent exhibit- jon. It was suggested that the pri- If You Vote in You and your friends quiet Favor! will be able to enjoy a ncipal of the schools be- ap- proached regarding making ar- rangements for letting the pupils be at the station to see the last run of the steam engines on the ONR. A letter was received from the National Ballet, expressing thanks and appreciation for the co-operation received while in Haileybury. A discussion regarding the est- ablishment of a shuffleboard court in the park was led by T. G. Tulloch and Wilf. Bailey and resulted in the appointment of Mr. Tulloch and Dr. J. C. Craw- ford as a committee to invésti- gate the possibilities of starting this new sport. Robert Sopha of Cobalt was present as the guest of William Ferguson, ; The singsong was led by Dr. Crawford with Miss Pat Arnold at the piano.
