The announcement was made at the Ottawa confer- ence of Mayors and Reeves Asso- ciation, A former president ol OMRA, Reeve Shipley was made an honorary president '""by rea- son of outstanding merit." Widow of Dr. M. A. Shipley and mother of three children, Reeve Shipley broke into civic politics in 1939 when she served on the Public School Board. In 1941, she tried to jump from the Board to the Reeve's chair and here she suffered her first and only de- feat. In 1942 she came through with flying colors and since then she has been challenged five times and on each occasion emer- ged victorious. iFve other times she has received acclamations. Reeve Shipley has been the principal figure in Teck Town- ship's struggle for larger muni- cipal grants from the Federal Government, in the drive for sec- ondary industries and in the im- provement of township roads. Recently, she proposed the hiring of an industrial commissioner to concentrate on bringing new in- dustrial life to the North and money has already been set aside for the township's share of the salary and the matter placed in the hands of the Kirkland Lake Chamber of Commerce. Her activity has not been con- fined solely to her home ground for she has been engaged in the work of various organizations throughout Northern Ontario and played a prominent part in the municipal provincial field. She ha® been referred to on many occa- sions as "the Voice of the North" and if she is retiring from civic politics, then it is generally felt that she will be heard again in greater fields. Holy Cross School Visits Ville Marie About eighty-two pupils of Holy Cross school received by way of reward a trip to VilleMarie last Saturday, May 31. They were ac- companied by their teachers. Two of the MclIsaac buses nrovided transportation, On arrival at Ville Marie the pupils went to CKVM broadcast- ing station and many of them had their first experience of speaking at the microphone. T heir recita- tions, choruses: solos and musical numbers were excellently render- ed and many a surprised Hailey- bury resident listened with plea- sure to the broadcast. The an- nouncer at CKVM was most hos- pitable and extended a cordial in- vitation to the pupils to come again and take part in the Satur- day Juvenile Hour. Later in the day the pupils went to the historic shrine over- looking the picturesque town of Ville Marie and there in a pilgrim- age prayed earnestly for the re- turn to health of their beloved pastor, Rev. Father Lafleur. Welland S, Gemmell, Ontario Mines' Minister. The re- port: P.R. 1952-4, is by Dr. James E. Thomson and Resident Geolo- gists of the Department of Mines and is an up-to-date revision of the preliminary report issued in 1950.
