Page Four THE HAILEYBURIAN THURSDAY, MAY 8th, 1952 United Kingdom Cancels Contract With Splint Factory The grave economic situation in the United Kingdom reached right across the Atlantic this month into the heart of Northern Ontario wtih the closing down of the Canadian Splint Factory. Be- cause of a cancellation of its con- tracts with England, the company which produces 16,000,000 splints a day for the United Kingdom, will shut down completely within the next three weeks and more than 100 employees will be out of work Several hundred others, bushworkers an@ farmers who ordinarily supply the Canadian Splint Company with logs have already been affected. The Splint Company which has operated here since 1942 has been one of the main sources of em- ployment in the tri-town area since it began producing match splints .All of these are exported to the United Kingdom. There- fore, it is now without a market. "We will definitely re-open again", said William Miller, Com- pany representative and acting- manager in the absence of Mana- ger Cecil Sharpe. now recovering in the General Hospital from a motor accident, "It may be a week or it may be six months de- pending on the British market." With production now at a low point in the distric't other big industrial plant, Hill - Clark- Francis, it is unlikely that the workers will be able to find em- ployment there. Although the men are working steadily now at Hill-Clark's, it has closed * twice for two-day stretches in recent months because there was little work and no new contracts. Two-thirds of the employees of the match factory live in Co- balt and Haileybury and many will now seek employment in the mines at Cobalt. The problem will be to find employment for the 32 girls now working there. The factory, first owned and operated by the Northern Onta-- rio Power Companv had heen va- cant for twenty years until 1942, when the present companv start- ed operations. There are about 12.000 Indians and Eskimos living in the Yukon and Northwest Territories and an equal number of white persons. Lumby Lake Area Scene of considerpdie staking activity in the Fall of 1950 and Spring of 1951, the Lumby Lake area in the Districts of Kenora and Rainy River has been covered in a preliminary report by R. S. Woolverton, it was announced to- day by the Hon. Welland S. Gem- mell, Ontario Minister of Mines. Gold was discovered there in about 1895, and occurrences of copper, lead, zinc, and iron have been indicated. The report is available free of charge upon application to the Ontario Department of Mines at Toronto. Mrs. W. B. Walton, national president of the Canadian Asso- ciation of Consumers, visited stocking manufacturers and sug- gested that they stamp the length as well as size of their hose. She discovered that only 1 manufac- turer did so and the others scoff- ed at her. So when the CA.C bulletin came out, readers were advised to ask for a length mark- ed hose if that was what they wanted, and soon eight manufac- turers were marking lengths. In 1951 pulp and paper, most important section 6f Canada's for- est industries, had greater value than wheat and all other grain crops combined. KKK KKKKKKRKRKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK.
