War Veteran Passes After Long Suffering Late Angus McAulay Had Been Resident of District for Over Twenty Years After months of suffering, An- gus Donald McAulay, veteran of the great war and for more than 22 years a resident of this district passed away at his home in North Cobalt on Monday of this week. He had been ill since last April, but for some time previous had not been in good health, suffer- ing from wounds received in the war and from other causes, so that his latter years were more troubled than those of the aver- age man, although he bore his afflictions with a patience that brought admiration from all who knew him. He was 50 years and three months old, The late Mr.-McAulay was born at North Shore, Victoria County, Nova Scotia, where he spent his early years and where his aged father, Mr. John Mc- Aulay, is still living. A telegram on Monday afternoon conveyed the sad news of his son's death to Mr. McAulay in his eastern home. He is 84 years of age. Mr. McAulay came to Hailey- bury in the summer of 1907. (road and his never failing courte- sy made-him many 'friends among the people of the towns in this district. For years he had been secretary of the local branch of the Railwaymen's Union at North Cobalt and was a general favor- ite among the men on. the road. In 1916, the late Mr. McAu- lay enlisted with the 228th Batta- lion' for service overseas. In 1917 he was wounded by shrapnel whilé serving in the Signal Corps at Vimy and, although he recov- ered sufficiently to remain in the army until the end of the war, and again return to the front, the effects of his wounds remained with him until he died. A small piece of shrapnel that had landed in his shoulder was never remoy- ed. Following the war years, Mr. McAulay took an active part with his comrades in the G.W.V. road until his illness made furth-' valued member For many: Lodge, I.0.0.F., gion. The oldest boy, Clayton, is 9, while the youngest, Grant, is only a few months old. The oth- ers are John and Boyd. His brother, Mr. N. J. McAulay, of Haileybury, and a sister, Mrs. John Morrison, in Nova Scotia, besides his aged father, also sur- vive. The funeral was held yester- sing Central Railway in 1911 and}A. and later in the Canadian isu aee afternoon from the family residence at North Cobalt, inter- .ment being made in Mount Plea- isant Cemetery, Haileybury. M..S. Boyd and Geo. T. Hamilton for ithe Lodge; Messrs. A. Keddie and Jas. Reavell, of the Legion; and: Messrs.-R. Richardson and Alex. MacRae, of the Railway. A large gathering of old friends and neighbors was present to pay their last respects and a great profusion of floral tributes testified to the,esteem in which - the late Mr. McAulay was_ held. The bereaved widow and family have the sincere sympathy of the whole community.
