THURS., OCTOBER 3st, 1929 Type ea LEYBURIAN Page 5 Curlers Foregather In Annual Session Fifty Present at Dinner Last Week; Prizes Presented and Officers Named About fifty members of the Haileybury Curling Club gather- ed at the Matabanick Hotel on Thursday night last for the an- nual meeting and dinner of the organization, when the activities of the past season were review- ed, the prizes won were officially presented and the officers elected for the coming season. There was great enthusiam over the club's prospects for the coming winter and, with a prospective larger membership than last year, the activities of the curlers prom- ise to be thoroughly enjoyed dur- ing the approaching winter. A. L. Herbert, last year's pres- ident, presided over the meeting. In opening he welcomed to the dinner Fred Thompson, of Swas- tika and Haileybury, one of the oldest members of the club, and S. S. Forneri, who for the past year or two has been out of town during the curling season. He said that financially the club had not done so well during the year, onaccount of a smaller member- ship, but that on the ice they had been particularly successful, as evident from the display of sil- verware that was to be handed out. In making the presentations several of the old members of the club took part. The Grover Shield was handed over officially to W. J. Adair by Henry Jemmett and accepted by that enthusiastic weilder of the broom. The other members of the rink are G. F. Summers, Ed. Wells. and Wm. Bulger, each of whom received a replica of the shield in minia- ture, donated by M. F. Fairlie, last year's vice-president. The prizes in the Shillington were presented by T. J. Meagher to D. E. Sutherland, skip, and Fred Austin, Hugh Balkwill and Hugh Boyle. The prizes for this event were silver water pitcher, donat- ed by Mr. R. T. Shilllington. W. H. Tuke presented the Jem- mett Trophy, the winners being D. H. Millar, skip, Henry, Jem- mett, C. F. Tuer and Dave EI- liott. 3 . The Montgomery Memorial Trophy, was presented by J. H. Stitt, one of the oldest members 6f the club, to Bert Terrill, skip, Russell Murphy, Jay Gould and A. L .Herbert, and accepted on behalf of the rink by the latter. The Elliott Cup, competed for annually for the benefit of the Children's Shelter, was won by Roy Thompson, skip, Jap Gib- bons, W. Donnelly and W. Bul- ger. This was presented to the winners by Taylor Pipe. The three major prizes in the T. & N. O. Bonspiel were also on hand and were presented to the' winners by A. L. Herbert, the Lee trophy going to W. J. Adair, the Maysey to E. E. Smith and the Canada Northern Power to F. H. Thompson. Following the ~ presentations the officers ofthe club for the coming season were elected as follows: Hon. Presidents--W. A. Gor- don, G. F. Summers and J. H. Stitt. President--E. E. Smith. Vice-Pres.--D. E. Sutherland. Secretary--M. S. Boyd. Treasurer--C. P. Furlong. The latter two being re-elected Executive--H. C. Dunbar, R. Y. Campbell, W. J. Adair, Taylor Pipe and A. L. Herbert. Schedule Committee -- H. A. Carlson, F. H, Thompson and R. W. Douglas. Umpire--L. H. Ferguson. Auditors--R. W. Douglas and Henry Jemmett. The thanks of the club were tendered in the form of votes to the retiring officers and to the donors of the various prizes, and LOCAL PEOPLE HURT IN BROADSIDE CRASH ON LAKE SHORE ROAD Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Liddicott and their little daughter all re- ceived cuts and bruises when their motor car, in which they were returning from New Lis- keard about midnight on Satur- day night, was struck broadside by one driven by A. Tessier, Co- balt, on the Lake Shore Road be- tween the pulp mill and MclIn- tosh's crossing. None of their injuries are likely to be serious, although some stitches were re- quired to close a wound in one of Mr. Liddicott's hands. The crash occurred when Tes- sier, whose car had taken the ditch, attempted to pull back on the road and swung almost straight across as the other car came along. The traffic was hea- vy at the time and before the roadway was cleared there were, fifty cars waiting to pass. It) took Chief MacGirr, who was} summoned immediately after the} crash, and Chief Miller, of New Liskeard, about a half hour be- fore the traffic jam was straight- ened out. Mr. Liddicott's car was badly smashed and the other one was also damaged. Want Donations of Cast-Off Clothing The local Corps of the Salva- tion Army would be glad to hear of anyone who has some spare clothing, particularly for 'child- ren, that they would be willing to donate to some needy families. The Army Officers have several people on their list who are find- ing it difficult to provide winter things for their children, and if this comes to the eye of any per- son who can help out, they will be very grateful. Things can ei- ther be sent to the Army hall or held and the officers notified, when they will be glad to call. the meeting closed after some general discussion. The financial statement, pre- sented by the treasurer, C. P. Furlong, is given herewith. In this connection, R. W. Douglas, one of the auditors, gave an anal- ysis of the expenses for the year, showing that it cost $12.50 per day to run the club during the curling season.
