12 THE HAILEYBURIAN June 8, 1912 Haileybury as a Manufac- turing Centre The importance of Haileybury as a manufacturing centre is gradually becoming impressed upon out- siders, although to those living in town it has for a long time been quite apparent that the manufacturing side of Haileybury was a phase which would eventually overshadow all others. The situation of the town is most favorable to manufacturing of several descriptions, for the town is located at the first spot in the district of Temiskaming where lake and rail meet. This is an advantage which will never be taken away, and it is an advantage that no other town can excel in. While coal is not mined in the vicinity of the town, nor anywhere in Ontario, still Haileybury is well supplied with power and power producers. The great number of water powers in the immediate neighborhood of the town, provide an asset which is of importance to manufacturing that can hardly be estimated. These powers comprise, among others, the Wabi Falls and High Falls, on the Wabi River ; Fountain Falls, Ragged Chute, Hound Chute, and the Notch, on the Montreal River, and the water powers available on the Malabitchouan River, in South Lorrain. Another source of water power which while not developed to-day, will in time be developed and transmitted to Haileybury, is the vast amount of energy now running to waste on the Querze River. around North Temiskaming. These supplies of white coal are practically unexhaustible, and when the factories of Haileybury have grown in number until they tax all these, there are still more sources of supply on the Montreal River which may yet be tapped and forced into the service of Haileybury. While wood as a fuel is not used to any great extent, still there is abundance of wood for this pur- pose which could be used if necessary. Another great advantage that Haileybury has in regard to its manufacturing possibilities is the ease with which the finished article may be shipped out. Haileybury has an advantage of over 330 miles in rail haul over Toronto when the question of supplying the new northland is faced, and this is no slight advan- which will some day be grasped, and Haileybury could fittingly produce sugar for markets to the south as well as the north. _ It has also been discovered that clay for pottery is present in large quantities. All these show possibilities which simply await proper development, and it is reasonable to expect that with the same rate of progress that has charac- terized Haileybury in the past, it will not be long before some or all these varied lines of industry will be paying their tribute to Haileybury. The first manufacturing which was done in Hailey- bury was in the lumber business, for matty years ago Mr. C. C. Farr had a saw mill on the site of the present Foster Mill. This industry has been run intermit- tently from its inception by Mr. Farr by several owners, and at one time the town was lighted by electricity generated by the mill boilers and engines, In connection with the saw mill during later years, a sash and door factory has been run, and is at present fully equipped for manufacturing a large output of dressed and manufactured lumber. Another sash and door factory was started by Mr. M. Floody, with whom was associated Mr. H. S. Hennessy, but this business was purchased by Mr. H. C. Durbar, who removed from the original site to the present factory near the railway station, where a big business is done. The manufacture of brick is still another industry which has been started, and the original Haileybury Brick Company is having its brick plant at the south end of the town entirely remodelled and rebuilt, and there is every prospect that brick from Haileybury will be used in many towns between Cochrane and Winnipeg along the Transcontinental Railway, for Haileybury's products will have a shorter haul than any town in Old Ontario to these new towns which are springing up. An industry which is located on the borders of Haileybury is that of the Energite Explosive Co., who are manufacturing an explosive known as Ched- dite, which is in great favor among mining men and those who need to use high power explosives. This industry is of large proportions and employs a con- siderable number of hands, who reside in Haileybury. nstrated in e explosive A notable feature of Cheddite was den the fire which occurred this month, as UNION BANK BUILDING tage, when one considers the cost of freight on many goods. It must be remembered when considering the future of Haileybury from a manufacturing stand- point, that there is hardly an article of raw material which it is not possible to produce within 150 miles of Haileybury, with the single exception of perhaps cotton, for as the country opens up and cattle raising is gone into, hides will be available in quantities which are at present undreamt of. There are mines producing every known economic mineral within 200 miles, which cannot be said of the lower portion of the province. Iron is mined in Northern Ontario, and both nickel, copper, cobalt, silver and gold are found within a reasonable radius, as every school child knows, so the supply of raw material will develop just as quickly as the demand grows. Wool is also an article which can be raised as well as anywhere in Canada, for sheep farming has already commenced in Temiskaming. There is nothing whatever to prevent the raising of sugar beets, for root crops grow to per- fection, so that there are possibilities in that direction in the factory was burned without an explosion occur- ing, showing its safety. A temporary factory was erected and the manu- facture of Cheddite resumed eight days after the date of the fire. The Company now intend to build a fireproof factory with a much larger capacity than the former one and the construction of this building will be com- menced at once and rushed to completion, when the production of Cheddit> will be larger than ever before, in order to meet the growing demand for this popular explosive. It is expected that shortly after this issue is pub- lished another industry, that of a fully equipped machine shop and foundry, will be arranged for, as a body of local men are forming a company to finance and operate such an industry. It will thus be seen that the manufacturing side of Haileybury's activities is destined to become of far greater proportions than the world at present realizes. The construction of the railway spur is also adding greatly to the manufacturing facilities of the town. ai Pe a 1 eos ake 9 CE THE STAFF OF THE ENERGITE EXPLOSIVE PLANT MR. F. W. HUTT a great interest in and devoted con- siderable time to any object which has been instrumental in furthering the town's interests. DAY Sec. Public School Board To satisfactorily perform the official duties of Assessor and Tax Collector in a town with an assessment amounting to $2,455,000, and annual taxes amounting to $74,000, requires the services of a man possessed with more than ordinary ability and considerable tact. That Haileybury has been fortunate in securing the ser- vices of such an individual in the person of Mr. Herbert A. Day, is evidenced by the fact that in the assessment just com- pleted and finally revised by the Court of Revision there were only thirty appeals out of three thousand separate assessments and the only changes made in the con- firmation of the assessor's roll were of a minor nature. Mr. Day is also Market Inspector and Publicity Commissioner for the town, besides which he is ably filling other important offices, being Secretary-Treasurer of the Haileybury Public School Board, having been re- elected as Public School Trustee at the beginning of the year. Personally Mr. Day possesses qualities that combine to give him an outstanding position in the community. Mr. Day is of English parentage, but has lived in Canada a number of years. He is an officer of St. George's Society. He has been acting as Lay Reader for the Church of England at North Cobalt, having conducted the services there for the past year or two. He has mastered the printing trade and edited newspapers. He was in charge of the HAILEYBURIAN some time prior to the time the writer became associated with it, and this year readjusted his official appointments so as to be enabled to devote some of his time to the HAILEYBURIAN in reportorial and other work.--T. Before coming here he practis- ed for some time in Toronto, after com- pleting his studies at the Royal College of Dental Surgeons in that city. DR. SOMERVILLE The publisaer of this issue desires to thank all the business and professional men who have assisted the arrangement of the edition. Hardly any one has refused to take part in the work, which it is hoped will do a little towards letting Haileybury people as well as outsiders, know what a grand town we have. If any one is omitted from notice, who should be noticed, tne omission is due to an oversight, and is regretted. Since first being interested in Photo- graphy fifteen years ago, I have closely followed its developments in its various branches, and believe the secret of my success is to the careful study of every detail in the business. 1 have given close attention to all the requirements of the amateur photo- grapher. MR. A. MACLEAN I have always made it my aim to pro- duce the highest type and most artistic portraits. You are cordially invited to visit my studio which is one of the most up-to- date studios in Ontario. Everybody knows the quality of the hundreds of thousands of post cards I have made in Haileybury. When you get a portrait at my studio you are assured of something original and not an attempt to copy some other man's ideas. 3 Let me demonstrate to you the differ- ence between good work and poor work, by taking for you tae best portrait you have ever had. Respectfully yours, - A. MacLean. 52 Broadway Street. It is not generally known that Hailey- bury claims one of the best tennis clubs in Ontario, yet this is a fact, and tnere are clubs in Toronto which have learned: this\by being beaten by Haileybury. HAILEYBURY'S PHOTOGRAPHER, GEO. A. SMITH. Mr. SitH, in searching for a new location for his studio business, visited a number of towns in New Ontario. He finally decided Haileybury offered an attractive future for "big business" in his profession. Over a year ago he established his studio in the Jorcy and Young Block, located on Ferguson Ave., Haileybury's main business street. His work equals the best to be had in our largest cities. Using a north light (daylight) for his portrait work, he secures fine, natural, and artistic pictures, which 'artificial light" processes can not approach. Mr. Smith has been obliged to enlarge- his original studio accommodations in order to meet the increasing volume of business. A recent addition has been made to his scope of work whereby he is prepared to make enlargements of all classes of pictures, i.¢., portraits and views, professional and for amateurs, Mr. Smith's work for the large mining companies of Cobalt and Swastika and his general out-door photography has earned him an enviable reputation in that branch of his profession. Mr. Smith is highly pleased with his great success in Haileybury, and is glad he located here. He intends keeping his business up to date in every respect, and will introduce the latest photographic novelties of merit to his patrons, not forgetting his pictures of the babies, the children, the grown-ups and the interest he takes in the amateur's work is what enables him to spell the word success in his business.
