Major Atoms just miss finals Midland French Dry Cleaners Major Atoms were one win and two goals away from an ap- pearance in the finals of the Golden Puck Hockey Tournament in Port Col- bourne on the weekend. In the first three con- tests, Midland had just one goal scored against them while potting eight. In the semi-final fixture, Midland saw,its goals against double losing 1 - 0 to Fort Erie. Midland goaltender, Joseph McGill was outstanding as the only goal he allowed came at 7:31 of the final frame. Unfortunately, his mates were unable to muster any offensive power as French Dry Cleaners dropped a 1 - 0 decision. Midland opened the tourney with a 2 - 0 win over Saltfleet. Joe Rooney Robillard paces the Penetang team Penetang Midgets were forced to go two overtime periods to oust Coll- ingwood in Georgian Bay Minor Hockey Associa- tion midget semi-final action. Brian Robillard scored the first two goals with the first coming at 6:51 of the first and the second was recorded at 11:44 of the middle frame. Both goals were asisted by Mike Argue. Trevor Per- cy and Mark Durant knotted the count for Col- lingwood within 24 seconds of each other with the first one coming at 5:34. Tim Ronald regained the Penetang lead with less than a minute and a half left on the clock assisted by Chris Vallee and Brandy Spring. Durant notched the equalizer early in the third for the hosts. Argue scored at 4:37 from Terry Bugg for a Penetang lead, but Matt Sprecker sent the game to an extra frame with a counter two minutes later. There was no scoring in the first 10-minute overtime period, but with 14 seconds left in a five- minute sudden death frame, Robillard struck with the game winner to send Penetang to the finals against Owen Sound. Canada 19869 an bd scored at 2:49 of the first period from Shawn McGuire and Don Delbrocco. Rooney struck again at 8:07 of the se- cond on a solo effort. Kevin Wood and Rooney connected with first period tallies as French Dry Cleaners strode to a 2- 1 win over Port Colbourne in game two. The hosts notched a tally at the seven minute mark of the third to ruin McGill's shutout. Midland knocked off Wainfleet 4 - 0 as Greg Spiker scored with less than a minute left in the opening frame, assisted by Wood. Spiker struck again at 7:23 of the se- cond with help from McGuire before Rooney counted two minutes later on a play with Wood and John Cameron. Chris Cadeau teamed with Chad Thayer with just 11 seconds left on the clock for a 4-0 lead. The teams skated through a scoreless third.
