The third annual Therrien's Furniture-St. Theresa's Elementary School Boys Basketball Tournament took place with eight teams competing. The eight-team tourney was held Saturday at St. Theresa's. . Huron Park defeated Monsignor Castex, the defending champions, 57-51 in an exciting con- test. Both teams finished pool play undefeated. In pool A, Castex defeated Sacred Heart 65-35 while Parkview pummelled Regent 73-45. Parkview downed Sacred Heart 66-37 and Castex squeezed past Parkview 51-45. Regent finished with a 58-39 win over Sacred Heart. In Pool B, St. Monica's of Barrie bested St. Ann's 54-38 while Huron Park nipped a stubborn St. Joseph's 46-45 in over- time. St. Monica's return- ed to edge St. Joe's 49-47 and Huron Park outlasted St. Ann's 52-37. In a closer contest, HP defeated St. Monica's 52-46 before St. Joe's won over St. Ann's 48-44. In the final, Castex pull- ed even with Huron Park on a pair of free throws by Ray Cloutier at the end of the half for a 19-19 tie. In the second half, strong rebounding by Dave Murray and end-to- end layups by Tom Barber put HP up by nine 'with five minutes to play. Huron Park hung on for a 57-51 win and the championship. At the conclusion of the tourney, Therrien's Fur- niture trophy was presented to coach Brain Parkhill and his Huron Park team. Acknowledge- ment was also given to coach Bob Doucette and his Castex squad for an excellent effort. Tournament All-Star plaques were presented to Dave Murray of Huron Park, Mark Kusyk of St. Monica's, Parkview's Todd Ritchie, Mark Desroches of St. Joseph's and Ray Cloutier of Mon- signor Castex. The tour- " Huron Park wins trophy nament MVP award was presented to Tom Barber of Huron Park. Special thanks must be given to Therrien's Fur- niture for continued sup- port of elementary school athletics in the area. House league prepares for important playoffs Tight competition in the Atom and Novice divisions of the Midland Minor Hockey House League was demonstrated in Satur- day's final games of the regular season. Avco Finance nipped Homelife in the Atom division to tie for second in the final standings with Homelife. Todd Vin- cent, Adam Gautreau and Dennis Warren scored for Avco with Kevin Bor- sa replying for Homelife. First-place Midland Police split a pair with fourth-spot Realty World winning 3-2 and dropp- ing a 9-5 decision. Richard Quesnelle fired a pair while Sherri Major netted a singleton in the first game for Police with Aaron Coutts supplying the offence for Realty World. In the rematch, Coutts popped in four counters while Jeff Waltenbury netted a hat trick. Scott Wylie and Cory Dagenais completed the scoring. Penetang loses to Elmvale Penetang Midgets end- ed the weekend with a pair of losses. Elmvale Co-op visited Penetang Saturday and handed them a 2-0 set back. Jim Ball converted a Jim Mar- tin pass at 7:49 of the opening frame for a 1-0 Elmvale lead. The Co-op struck again late in the second as JIm Pottage counted assisted by Shane Bywater. Craig Cochrane was strong in the Elmvale net collecting the shutout. Penetang dropped a 6-4 decision in Owen Sound Sunday. Scoring details were not available at press time. The Penetang midgets are awaiting the winner of the Parry Sound/Hunt- sville series to begin their first round of Ontario Minor Hockey Associa- tion playoffs. Parry Sound leads the best of five series two games to one with a game three scheduled for tonight. Adam Desroches scored four times for Police with Geoff Langley adding a single. In Novice play, Bike Shop was shutout by third-place Bourgeois Motors 2-0. Bike Shop finished the season atop the Novice standings. Shawn Pattison and Levi Merrit scored _ for Bourgeois while John Gignac took the shutout. Second-place Royal LePage had a hard time with fourth place Free Press but managed to eke out a 2-1 decision. Chris Cooper netted both LePage goals while Robin Cameron answered for the Free Press. Dynasty Inn continued its winning record atop A race the Tykes section with an 11-2 romp over Bertram Fuels. Jeremy Sauve rack- ed up six counters with Ryan Dorion and Jamie Hamelin popping in two apiece. Brandon Niceforo notched a single. Ryan King and Brock Lavin each shot one _ for Bertram's. Stoneleigh Motors managed a 4-3 win over Mike's Mart with double efforts from Kris Franz and Joshua Jeffery. Justin Neilon led Mike's with two while Tom Murphy scored the other. Smith's Mobile won three and tied one. In a pair against Wye Heritage, Smith's record- ed 2-1 and 5-1 wins. Jazin Zingel notched both markers in the first con- test while Keith Duval answered for Heritage. Martin Kraftscik led the way in the second contest With a hat trick while Ryan Descham- bault and Terry Walten- bury rounded out the scoring. Sean Rourke ruined Smith's shutout bid. Smith's romped over Elmvale 8-1 with Kraft- scik registering another hat trick. Jason Levesque (2), Tyler Gravel, Ander Graveland and James Kranz aided in the win. Colin Leonard put Elmvale on the board. Gravel, Levesque and Zingel recorded the markers in a 3-3 draw with Borden. A Midland player races up ice Sunday night in Georgian Bay Junior C Hockey action. Midland won the contest 12-2. Both teams have three games remaining in the regular schedule. The Kings host Huntsville tonight and make a return trip Sunday, while Midland travels to Innisfil tonight, hosts Penetang Friday and goes to Parry Sound Sunday.
