Premier David Peterson offered the task to Muskoka-Georgian Bay's MPP because of his background. As a former high school teacher, prin- cipal, and school board superintendent, he has first hand experience of the problem of drug use in the schools. Black The premier was reac- ting to the recommenda- tion of a coroner's jury in- vestigating the drug-related death of Toronto teenager Benji Hayward. Black has two months to produce recommendations for the premier. His recom- mendations are due on Oct. 14. He is working with the ministries of health, educa- tion, and community and social services, and the of- fices of the attorney- general and of the solicitor-general. He will review studies of the problem done in On- tario and other parts of Canada. He will consider as well the reactions of the Americans and Europeans to their problem of drug use by young people. The conclusions of organizations such as the Addiction Research Foun- dation and the Council on Drug Abuse will be includ- ed in his survey. No single agency or organization can deal with drug abuse, Black said. The problem is the com- munal responsibility of government, education and health officials, families, police, and other segments of society. "I'm going to approach it with an open mind," Black said during a short inter- view last Thursday. "It's a real challenge and I'm glad to have the opportunity to have an impact in a positive way." He was cautious about making any early judgements of the drug problem in Ontario. The premier said, "It's not a task force to establish the gravity of the problem. It's a task force to look at all of the things we're do- ing now, to examine them and come up with recom- mendations to make it bet- ter for the future." Church. Mrs. Thomas E.
