Just another day of golf... Hole In One Ivy Kitchen, playing in the Monday Night couples League at Brooklea Golf and Country Club, achiev- ed the golfers dream last Monday. Partnered by hus- band Frank, Fran Whale and Wade Dickerson, Kit- chen did the near impossi- ble on the last hole, a par three, 95 yard tester. by Ed Pearson Special It was a day like any other day at the Brooklea Golf and Country Club on Monday, except that Ivy Kitchen scored a hole in one. The rare event hap- pened like this. She was playing in the Monday Night Couples League. Her playing partners were, hus- band Frank, Fran Whale and Wade Dickerson. Although the day had started with heavy rain, threatening clouds put evening play in doubt, the foursome were enjoying a pleasant round of golf. The fairways and greens on the executive West course are in pristine con- dition, the maintenance staff have worked miracles this year to combat tropical weather conditions. Ivy Kitchen's round, as she ap- proached the final hole had been undistinguished. "Time to make amends," she thought. The 27th hole is a trickly little swine. Surrounded on three sides by water, there is a little relief on the right side, a grassy bank. That is where us cowards shoot for. None of that sissy stuff for Ivy. Selecting her faithful eight iron, she placed her trusty Top Flight on the white wooden tee (make unknown), she took a deep breath and shot for the flag. It looked good all the way. A high ball, it landed about five yards in front of the flag, took two bounces, shrugged it's shoulders and settled into the cup. We heard the noise from two holes back, I though that Wade Dickerson had caught his beard in the ball washer. By the time we got to the clubhouse the com- motion had settled down to an uproar. Ivy Kitchen, a trim figure, if she will forgive me, a senior lady golfer, was becomingly modest. She took up golf in 1972 when she was in her early fifties. This is her first hole in one. If never comes to most of us. Ross Howard, the club pro, in- formed that it was the first hole in one by a lady this year. Her name will be engraved on the trophy in the pro-shop. The Indians then retired to the Georgian Bay Hunters: and Anglers for dinner and dancing. Eagles take two-game lead In Olympia Fastball League finals action last week, Brooklea Eagles took a pair from Dial-a-Movie to lead the best of seven series two games to none. Tuesday night, Brooklea struck for a pair early, scor- ing in the firt frame and added four in the fourth before cashing a final counter in the sixth. Dennis Cascagnette was the offensive star for the victors with a three for four night including a double. Larry Patenaude and David Cascagnette col- lected a pair of hits each in the 12 hit attack. Patenaude picked up the win on the mound for the eagles, striking out four, walking one and issuing just six base hits. August tim In the first inning, Den- nis Cascagnette singled with one out and advanc- ed on a stolen base. With two out, Kevin Beausoleil walked. David Cascagnette plated both runners with a well placed single. John Freymuth and Gary Cascagnette walked to load the bases but Martin Cascagnette was thrown out 6-4 to end the threat. The fourth inning also could have produced a lot of runs as Brooklea had the bases loaded with one out. Jim McDonald came to the plate and stroked a two bagger plating Larry Patenaude and John Dion. Beausoleil's single scored Dennis Cascagnette and Jim McDonald for a 5-0 e to think of ice skating After a long hot summer the Midland Figure Skating Club is preparing for another busy winter session. As in previous years, there will be programs available for all levels. The Canskate program is a series of seven levels designed for the beginner to low intermediate. It is ideal for youngsters wan- ting to play hockey, or just to be comfortable on their skates for school skating or with their friends. Figure skates are not required but skates with good ankle sup- port are vital. For skaters who would like to proceed with figure skating, there are two choices-Canfigureskate and the CFSA test pro- gram. They teach the same elements but with more or less emphasis on testing. Further information on the programs can be obtained- from Carol Lavin at 526-3176. The Canskate program will be offered on Monday and Wednesday at 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. The Can- figureskate and CFSA are held Tuesday and Thursday. Registration will take place at the Midland Civic Centre on September 6 and 8 from 7-9 p.m. and on Saturday, Sept. 10 from 10-12 & 1-3. The fees for the current year will be: Can- skate - $125 for 2 days, $75 for 1 day. Canfigureskate and CFSA 1-$165 for 2 days, $90 for 1 day. CFSA 2 $220 for full time, $125 for partial membership. Marcia Bell will be retur- ning as head coach. lead. Two more outs end- ed the scoring. A pair of dial-a-Movie er- rors in the sixth resulted in another counter for Brooklea. Wednesday night, Brooklea put the first four batters on base but could only cme up with a single run. In the third inning, an error, a walk and a single cashed two more counters to make it a 3-0 ball game. In the bottom of the frame, . lead-off batter Tom Powell managed to cross the plate for the first Dial-a-Movie' run in nine innings. Leon Robitaille scored in the third to up the count to 4-1 while Kevin Beausoleil singled, stole a base and scored in the fifth. Garry Cascagnette's two out single in the sixth plated Len Desjardins for the final Brooklea run. In the bottom of the seventh, John Cook crank- ed a two out, two run tri- ple to make the final score 6-3. The series resumes Tues- day, August 23 with game four scheduled~ for Wednesday night. Both contests start at 7 p.m. at Herb Beauchamp Memorial Athletic Field. The Best is Even Better Now Sealy.
