1A great score Eight-year-old Max Woods and six-year-old Ashley Woods won their piano duet 9-years-old and under division with a score of 95 last week at the Cana- | dian National Exhibition's Music Festival. The Tay Barrie. Township residents also placed second in individual categories. They are invited to return for a scholar- ship Sept. 2. Their teacher is Joyce Langford of One man, 3 votes in county democracy Unless 104 voters turn up before the Nov. 14 elec- tion, Midland will have one representative with three votes on Simcoe County council Midland is credited with 9,646 electors. It needs at least 9,750 voters to gain a second representative and a fourth vote. The membership of the county council has been | ~ revised tokeep the number | of members from rising to --- an unmanageable number. Member municipalities with increasing popula- tions were getting more members on the council. Revision of the voting list before the last municipal election resulted in 50 ad- ditional names. At the last Port McNicoll council meeting that village's reeve, John Moreau, said the new system was unfair to smaller municipalities. He noted that the current Sim- coe County warden, Ken Knox, won his post with fewer individuals suppor- ting him than the second place person, whose sup- porters. carried more weight than Knox's. He doesn't. And he wishes more peo- ple were like him. Because, he says, the information circulating in area newspapers that Midland may pull out of the North Simcoe Waste Manage- ment Association is not to be taken seriously. "It's very irritating, very frustrating," he said during a council meeting in the village last Wednesday night. "It's almost like a conspiracy." Midland councillor Bob Brush is leading a drive to pull Midland out of the five-member trash manage- ment group. He says about $800,000 could be saved if the town went on its own. "He hasn't got any facts or figures," Armstrong declared last week. "But people read it in the press and tend to believe it." This prompted Reeve John Moreau, an outspoken critic of the pro- vincial government's role in the local waste manage- ment saga, to get into the swing of things. Instead of picking on the media, he said: '"'There should be a |that you read, |says councillor one-man committee to find out why we're being raped by the province. That's ex- actly what we're getting here -- raped!"' Tax money not paying for trash The tipping fee starting Oct. 1 at the garbage transfer site means Mit- subishi would pay an addi- tional $77,000 a year to get rid of the garbage it presently produces. Officials at the company last Friday were unaware that their company will have to pay the new charge, although they had a meeting earlier this month with North Simcoe Waste Management Association representatives. They believed that the $775,000 a year in tax their company pays the Town of Midland covered waste disposal. Starting Oct. 1, truck drivers bringing industrial and commercial garbage to the garbage transfer site will be charged either $77 a tonne for garbage with recyclable material remov- ed or $100 a tonne for un- sorted garbage. The two charges are designed to en- courage recycling. The tip- ping charges will be pass- ed for payment by the haulers to their customers. Garbage removal is the only municipal service the color television , picture tube manufacturer receives for its $775,000 a year in municipal tax, vice presi- dent Mike Colliver said. The company pays a con- tractor to carry 14 tonnes a week to the garbage transfer site.
