Retail sales of this Survey scholars Two new scholarships to en- courage young people to pursue a career in surveying have been an- nounced by the Georgian Bay group of the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors. The scholarships, worth $350 each, will be awarded to two students entering Georgian Col- lege's Survey Technician program this September. Surveyors right across the pro- vince are "screaming" for trained technicians and technologists, said Doug Smith of Barrie, secretary of the regional group. Contruction has been booming the past four years and shows no signs of _abating. Surveyors are the first step in the development process. Withouth their plans and specifica- tions construction cannot begin. "There is a great need for qualified survey crews and this is one of the ways we are encourag- ing students to enter the program," _ said president John Harvey of Midland. It's also a char- ming beer, brewed "'in the middle of nowhere," as John Wiggins puts it. And soon it will become hard to get. That's simply because produc- tion capacity will be reached. In the last two months, establishments from all over On- tario have had their requests to be put on tap turned down. They were not within the fifty mile radius. An even more impossible request came from California where a restaurant wanted the kegs sent by air-freight in refrigerated compartments. As it stands, Creemore Springs delivers weekly to 85 licensees and 28 Brewer's Retail stores. This is almost unheard of in the industry: most breweries distribute through Brewer's Retail. Wiggins sees that "'if you do your homework and come up with a fine product, people really do go after the better mousetrap."' The promotional strategy of the tiny brewery is also very different from the "big guys". Advertising is selectively aimed at people who already drink Creemore Springs lager. By keeping them en- thusiastic, word of mouth advertis- ing is encouraged. This enthusiasm is embodied in an official fan club for Creemore Springs lager. The Loyal Order of Frothquaffers will soon have their own newsletter and an inevitably growing membership. What does the future hold? "This is one case where growth doesn't signify success. Our ambi- tion is to be running at full capacity in the low season and being a little hard to get in the high season."' For Creemore Springs, that am- bition is not far from being realized.
