i Le Caron places fifth of seven by Yvan Lacelle During the 1987 boys' volleyball season, the three teams from Le Caron, midget, junior and senior qualified to participate in the regional meet in which the juniors ended up in first place while the midgets and the seniors ended up in second place. With these statistics, all three teams participated in thruwa mufflercentre the GBSAA championship in the "A"' category. The teams from Le Caron didn't decieve anyone. On November 10, the junior and senior teams became number one and the cham- pions of the GBSAA boys' "A", What an encouraging day that was. Hours and hours of practices paid off! But for the seniors, it was a new begin- ning that meant preparing for the OFSAA where the best 14 teams in the pro- vince would meet to deter- mine which was the best team in Ontario. It was the first time that a_ boys' volleyball team would represent Le Caron at OF- SAA. What an honor that was for the players and the coach, David Brunelle and for the small school of Le Caron. OFSAA was held this year at Laurentian Univer- sity in Sudbury on December 4 and 5. Le Caron's first match was Friday, December 4 at 9:50 A.M. against Chelmsford, last year's champions. The boys were well prepared physically and mentally. All the players knew they were go- ing to play at least six mat- ches during those two days. Nevertheless, the strategy was to take the teams one at a time. Through all those days, the players and coach were thinking volleyball, volleyball and more volleyball. After a good warm-up, the team was ready for their first opponent. David Brunelle gave his starting line-up to the scorekeeper and Le Caron won their first match against the former champions from Chelmsford. What an en- couraging win "hat was, 15-10, 15-8! There was plenty of tension on both teams. The players showed a lot of confidence, deter- mination and concentration. In their second match, Le Caron played against Kapuskasing. They lost 13-15 and 3-15. In that match, Kapuskasing used a variety of plays which caught the team off guard. On the same day, Le Caron played against Carleton ° Place. Le Caron lost 9-15, 10-15. By the end of the afternoon, Le Caron played Acton fer their last match of the day. Le Caron won the match 15-13, 13-15, and 15-13. What a brilliant victory! At the end of the first * competition, four teams ; out of seven were tied for second place, including Le Caron. The next two mat- ches were crucial for Le Caron if they wanted to participate in the playoff round for bronze, silver and gold medals. Saturday morning, the Round Robin continued. Le Caron played Clarke, a decisive match, but Le Caron lost to a well balanc- ed team by the score of , 7-15, 9-15. After this match Le Caron had no chances for madals. Le Caron had another match to play to complete their Round Robin. They won against Osgoode 15-8, 15-10 which gave them three wins and three losses in the tournament. Le Caron volleyball team end- ed in fifth place in their own division out of seven. For a first representation, it was a success. The players showed good behavior all through the weekend and represented well their team, their school, the community and their association. Yvan Lacelle, Head of the Phys. King nets winner The Stroud House League Tyke Tournament came down to a battle bet- ween the two Midland en- tries last Sunday. Jory's IDA, with some Dynasty Inn players to fill in for holiday absentees, won the championship with a 4-3 overtime victory over Mr. Submarine. The win came four minutes and 24 seconds into the ex- tra session as Ryan King netted a pass from Adam Contois. Jory's had _ earlier defeated Alliston 4-1 in the opening round, then skated past Innisfil Lions 11-0 in the second round. Mr. Submarine blasted Stroud's Big Bay Sports 10-0 in their opening con- test, then nipped Stroud's Pauley Anna 3-1. Jory's Adam Contois net- ted five markers in the three games to go along with three assists. Team- mate Greg Dorion potted six markers and added an assist. For Ryan King, his championship winning marker was his third goal of the day. Other Jory marksmen were Jason Reynolds (three goals), Matthew Murdock and Jeremy Sauve. Jeff Latour tallied five times for Mr. Submarine while Mitch McClung and Joe Smitten scored four each. Singles were tallied by Kris Franz, Lucas Taylor and Ryan Daigle. Novices in finals Penetanguishene Novices blanked Bracebridge 4-0 in the Wasaga Beach Silver Stick Tournament on_ the weekend. - Brian Moreau notched a pair with singles going to Stu McConkey and Ryan Robertson. Penetang then handed Flesherton an 11-7 setback. McConkey struck for a hat trick with Chris Henry picking up a pair along with Serge Moreau. Singles went to Serge Lesperance, Jason Four- nier, Chris Ealey and Brian Moreau. Penetang's third contest was against Wasaga Beach. Penetang skated to a 7-7 tie as Todd Miller accounted for all of the Beach scoring. Scott Hartman and Stu McConkey each fired a pair for Penetang with singles coming off the sticks of Serge Moreau, Chris Henry and Brian Moreau. Penetang now advances to the finals Saturday, January 2 against Elmvale. Siesta time This woman took time between games to catch up on her sleep as the annual Silver Stick Tournament got underway Satur- day at both Centennial and Penetanguishene Arenas.
