Big plans for seniors Martha Dickerson has ambitious plans for ser- vices for seniors. A com- promise is needed if she is going to be able to try to put them into action. Dickerson described her ideas for the program of- fered by the proposed Askennonia Seniors Cen- tre at the most recent Midland town council meeting. The ambitious plans will be nothing more than ideas if there is no support from both the municipal and provincial levels of govern- ment. The last hurdle is getting a commitment from the town council for ongo- ing support. Dickerson called her pro- gram uniquely different and multipurpose. It would have educational, health, life skills, and crisis assistance components in addition to the usual social and recreational offerings. The program is designed with the well aged and the disadvantaged disabled elderly person in mind. Mondays and Fridays would have an educational theme. Activities for small groups, such as painting, craft making, square danc- ing and genealogy were mentioned. Life management would be the theme on Tuesdays. Wednesdays would be health maintenance day. A foot clinic would be held and a public health nurse would visit. Social and recreational events would happen on Wednesdays. Dickerson mentioned dancing, par- ties and a film festival. Calvary Baptist Church's congregation is offering its church as space for the centre. The church is ac- cessible to the handicap- ped, a high priority, Dickerson said. She has planned as well a visiting committee. The committee members would identify, and then visit and support, the home bound elderly. The budget for the Askennonia Seniors Cen- tre's first year has been reduced. When the town council first heard from Centre board chairman Reverend James Manuel, the budget was $47,000. The budget had been reduced to $40,000 at the town finance committee meeting which preceded the council meeting. Dur- ing the council meeting, Rev. Manuel spoke of a $35,000 budget. The town council in the spring agreed to donate up to eight hours a week of the time of recreation director Bryan Peter; to give $2,000 in cash; to appoint two members to the Asken- nonia Seniors centre board. Fifty per cent of the budget, promised by the provincial government, is contingent on the munici- pality committing itself to 20 per cent of the budget. Donation of the time of the recreation director is ac- ceptable as part of the municipality's contribu- tion. The Centre supporters say the council has to pass an Elderly Persons Centre bylaw so that available money from the provincial Smoke law proposed A public meeting concer- ning smoking in public places will be held at the Midland Public Library this Thursday at 1 p.m. The meeting will be held to formulate a proposal for Employee of month The Midland Boatworks announced its employee of the month for October is Carolyn Maurice. A 60 YEARS OR SERVICE TO CANADIANS government will be releas- ed. The council hasn't passed the bylaw because the bylaw commits the municipality to support the centre with cash for as long as a Centre exists. The council is unwilling to commit future councils to a new financial respon- sibilty. The council is con- cerned that it would not have control over the size of its annual cash contribu- tion. The council wants the } Askennonia people to con- sider other sources of cash | support.
