The District Seniors was held at the Barrie Country Club on September 10 - it was the 30th anniversary of this popular event and was started by Ede Corby from Barrie who was there to play golf and participate in the festivities as it was her 80th birthday. Aileen Moreau and Maddy English were in a 3 hole play - off to decide the win- ner of the Diamond Lil Sec- tion of the Seniors. Aileen was the winner - tough to have to complete against one's own sister. Also, at the Golf Club on Sept. 15th Kumiko Tajima and Barb Smellie were presented with their break 100 pins. Congratulations to these girls. Small ~ by Gerry Barbour The recent article on those athletes who were in- ducted into the Sports Hall of Fame was of special in- terest to a former resident of Penetanguishene who knew some of them. This small town has pro- duced some very talented people over the years. Un- fortunately, came along too soon. With today's coaching and equipment they would be undoubted- ly displaying their skills in the "big leagues"'. Thinking back, I am amazed how well these people performed at whatever sport was occu- pying their attention at the time. Harold Crippin and Jack Symons are two who come readily to mind. Crippin played shortstop for the team in the 30's, could cover ground in the style of Tony Fernandez, was a great glove man and was easily the best batter on the team. He did go on to play for one of the finest clubs in the City of Toronto. In addition, he was great Dave Hamilton the co-ordinator of Huronia Special Olympics, Dave Hamilton, is in need of several volunteers for the local Special Olympics for the Mentally Retarded program. Volunteers are required for the Saturday afternoon at track and field and was a fine football player. Jack Symons was the quarterback for the football team, rugby, it was called then. Quick hands, good passer, could "'bootleg" the ball like Bernie Faloney and a great broken field runner. Salem 'Punch'? Dube played for Hamilton Ti- Cats. Tigers, they were called then. Tommy Stewart, a great little hockey player. The list could go on and on. Bert Corbeau was through playing hockey for Montreal Canadiens when I was a youngster, but he coached the local team for a while. I hung on his every word. He used to say, "if you can't beat 'em in the alley, you can t beat 'em on the ice"' I was amused at Phil Marchildon's account of losing a "no-hitter" because of a bad call by an umpire. That's not the on- ly "no-hitter" Phil lost. Barrie, Midland, Coll- ingwood and Meaford were in the league in the 30's. Phil and Freddie Devillers, the catcher, kept a book on the opposing hit- ters. Barrie had a little red haired scholarly looking guy who wore thick glasses playing in their outfield and opposite his name, Phil had written, "can't hit" (with my apologies to the local english teachers). One Saturday, Barrie came to play on the dia- mond in Becks Field near where the Hydro office is now located. In order to save money, the grass in the outfield was kept crop- ped by a herd of cows which were removed prior to the game. The players became adept at side step- ping "cow biscuits" while chasing fly balls. For eight innings, Phil never issued a walk nor did he allow a hit. Top of the ninth, who comes to bat? You guessed it, "'little Red", and didn't he hit a "can of corn" into short right field, Jim Ball, our slick fielding first baseman, had no chance for it. The right fielder and Vern Mur- ray, the second baseman, had the best opportunity to League Champions Chez Henri won the Huronia Slow Pitch League Championship four games to two. Tery Carruthers knocked in the winning run in the 7-1 final game victory. Pictured from left to right front row are: Ernie Mike Brasseur, Desroches, Desrochers, Mike Waugh. Mariel Marion, Andrew Zurawski, and Blayne Neilson. Back row left to right: Terry Carruthers, Dave Miller, Tony Miller, Tim Sweeting, Trent Maracle, Jeff Dunn, Paul Sipila and Doug bowling to act as scorers. Help is also required in cross country skiing, snowshoeing and swimming. The bowling and swimming programs are beginning this week. Give Dave a call at ARC: town but lots of talent preserve the "no hitter'. Alas, in spite of a diving at- tempt by the right fielder, who slid through several "cow biscuits', which for- tunately were dry, the ball fell to the ground several feet from the outstretched gloves. I won't tell you what Phil said, but good man that he was, he trudg- ed back to the mound and routinely disposed of the remaining batters. Phil, if you should get to read this column, did you and Fred- die ever amend your book to read "can't hit nuthin- but sometimes gets lucky"? Incidentally, Phil was known around the town as _ Be or Boy Marchildon, The "Babe" was tacked on him when he went to play for Philadelphia Athletics under the guidance of owner-manager Connie Mack whose real name for you baseball buffs was Cor- nelius MacGillicuddy.
