HOME IMPROVEMENT Campbell's dates back to 1915 in Elmvale In 1915, S.E. Campbell opened Campbell's Hardware Store for business in Elmvale. At that time the store was : located where Elmvale Sporting Goods and the 5 cent to $1.00 store are currently located. In 1929 the store moved to its present premises where it has con- tinued to grow and serve the local people with the same friendly ser- vice that began in 1915. In 1950 the business was taken over by Campbell's sons, W.S. (Bill) and E.W. (Ed) Campbell. Ove the years, the hardware store re- mained much the same until the' business changed hands once again. In 1976 Dave and Marg Campbell became the third genera- Swann. tl THIRD GENERATION TO RU DAA tion of Campbell's to run the store. To date, Campbell's Dominion Hardware has 73 years of family pride behind it. While Dave can barely remember how the hardware store once was, he does recall that most of the hardware supplies were sold from wall boxes. The store on both sides was lined from top to bottom with wooden boxes that held all the store's merchandise. Large ladders ran on a track from end to end to allow salespeople to fill orders from the various boxes. Pails were hung from the ceiling and the centre of the store was reserved for big displays of appliances. Today, most merchandise packaged for ease of display and AM ig, N HARDWARE STORE Dave Campbell is the 3rd generation of Campbell's to run Campbell's Domi- nion Hardware. With 73 years of family pride in the business you can find the same friendly service that Dave's grandfather started back in 1915. Many home. decorating projects, such as the addition of a deck or landscaping ties in the garden, re- quires the purchase of wood. Wood is one of man's most ver- satile and valuable resources. It is a basic building product used in all types of structures. While this pro- duct remains so versatile,it is not without its problems. Natural enemies such as insects, decay causing fungi, marine organisms, fire and the weather all cause havoc to wood. With the technique of pressure preservative treating, wood can be protected against these enemies. Longlasting protection is provided during the pressure treating pro- cess when a preservative and fire retardant chemicals are forced into the wood. The Canadian Institute of Treated Wood in Ottawa suggests that while no single preservative will provide protection against all of wood's natural enemies, each has it's own features which benefit the wood and allow it to be used for structures that require longlasting protection. Of all our resources, wood is the most renewable. With the use of pressure treating, the extent of the service life of wood is extended. With the insertion of chemicals, wood fiber becomes useless food for fungi and insects. The result is wood that will last indefinitely pro- vided the chemicals don't evaporate or are leached from the wood cells. The Canadian Institute of Treated Wood lists four categories of wood preservatives: Creosote and Creosote Solutions, Oilborne Chemical Formulations, Water- Outdoor project tips borne Chemical Formulations and Fire Retardant Chemical Formulations. To pressure treat wood, chemicals are applied to it, through pressure, in huge retorts. The chemicals seep into the inner wood cells, as well and cool the surface and outer layers of the wood. Wood preserving standards and specifications have been set by the The Canadian Standards Associa- tion (CSA) which ensures the wood you buy is adequately treated. Standards are also set for fire retardant chemicals by the CSA, along with performance ratings by the Underwriter's Laboratory of Canada (ULC). The Canadian Institute of Treated Wood offers some guidelines in the use and handling of pressure treated wood. It sug- gests wearing gloves to avoid direct skin contact when handling or working with this type of wood. Avoid inhalation of sawdust over a prolonged period. A dust mask is advisable, as is working outdoors if possible. If skin has been exposed, wash thoroughly. Clothes that ac- cumulate any sawdust or perser- vative should not be worn again until laundered separately from other clothing. Dispose of treated wood by burial or trash collection rather than by burning as the smoke or ashes could produce hazardous chemicals. There are provincial and federal regulations dealing with the disposal of large amounts of treated wood. Check with your dealer as to which type of pressure treated lumber is the right choice for your project. Page 12a, Home Improvements, September 1987 inventory control. Dave and Marg have tried to balance the two eras by selling products in modern packaging but retaining some nostalgia by packaging in lengths under plastic. Bathroom Cont'd from pg. 11 room or bathroom where too many colours would look busy or very bright colours would be over powering, try the textured-look rugs to give the room a more airy feeling. Wall-to-wall bathroom carpeting virtually unheard of until a few years ago, is also good for giving a feeling of more space as well as a touch of luxury and elegance. You can use wall-to-wall carpeting alone or with area rugs over it. Solid colours or muted pat- terns with a contrasting border will give your bathroom a dramatic new look. Because moisture is ever present in the bathroom, be sure you check the fibre content carefully when shopping for bathrugs. Dave notes the consumer has re- mained basically the same, but the hardware industry has split off into specialized fields such as plumb- _ ing, electrical and heating. Hard- ware stores are dealing with con- tractors and are kept quite busy. They also deal with the homeowner in the do it yourself market. This market is still popular and today's consumer still demands product knowledge and service from the hardware store. While the future trend in the in- dustry seems to be computers, Campbell's Dominion Hardware is proud to offer a different at- mosphere from the big city hard- ware stores. While modern tools and appliances stock the shelves, the friendliness-of a small town hardware store remains. Everybody knows everybody, much the same as it was when the hardware store began in 1915. This proves that while looking to the future is impor- tant, so is our past and how the two interlap. THE EXPERT'S TOUCH Sico has a finish for all your interior and exterior painting projects.
