Through _the-tens Howard rink should go see Jays again by David Gravelle The Russ Howard rink should attend more Blue Jays games, especially as the season winds down and the pennant race becomes tighter. If last Saturday's blowout at the Ex was any indica- tion, the World Champions should be put on contract by Pat Gillick as the team's lucky charm. Walt Lemmon from Labatt's invited the Howard rink to attend the New York Yankee-Toronto Blue Jay game Saturday and to sit in the Brewery's private box up behind home plate. Unfortunately, (not for me) second Tim Belcourt had a couple of distrac- tions Saturday and couldn't make it to the game. I was the lucky stand-in. Tim had to work, and the Belcourts are also waiting their first child which is due any day now. If you've never had the opportunity to sit in one of those private boxes at Ex- hibition Stadium you don't know what you're missing. You head upstairs on a private elevator along with members of the media and other important people. As a matter of fact, we got a glimpse of Yankee boss George Steinbrenner prior to the match. And, guess what...he wasn't chewing out Lou Pinniella. Once you arrive: at the V.I.P. box you're greeted by an attractive young lady who makes sure your glass is always full and the bowl of popcorn in front of you has enough salt on it. If you get really hungry, she can order you anything from hot dogs to ham- burgers, to cold deli plates, to hot finger foods. Hanging on the back of the door of this plush suite are ball gloves. Glenn Howard spent most of the day itching for a foul ball to come our way but it never transpired. The balls were too busy heading out of the park as the Jays creamed the Yanks 13-1 with Russ Howard's look-alike Ernie Whitt cashing in a pair of homers and six runs. Prior to the match Russ was interviewed on T.S.N. Maybe, some of you caught it. Well, the interviewer Fergie Olver, the guy we love to hate knows '"'didd- ly squat" about the game of curling. But, as a true pro Clear win with 68% he made it look like he was a short version of Ray Turnbull. If you really want. to © know, Russ carried the in- terview. He wasn't even phased when the skips favourite player, Tony Fer- nandez, ran through the picture as the interview was being taped. Meanwhile, the rest of us were hanging out in the dugout with the guys... George, Willie, Jess, and Lloyd. By the way, if any of you out there have sons or daughters who attend York University in Toronto and were wondering about their whereabouts Satur- day, they were at the game. They did send a message but it wasn't to mom and dad. A plane with a banner on the back, told the University of Toronto, "York rules Metro" which to decipher the meaning is "we can drink more than you guys and stay up later.' Ha Ha Ha!!! All in all, Russ, Glenn, Kent, Larry, and myself would like to thank Labatt's and more specifically Walt Lemmon and John Ball for arranging the trip to the ball park. Let's do it again sometime. Labour Day bridge As usual the afternoon session at the Coldwater Bridge Club was cancelled because of the Labour Day holiday, but the evening open pairs game resulted in a clear win by John Dowling and Jim Hughes of Midland with 68 per cent. Dot and Dac Harris were second with 58, and the re- mainder of the field was closely bunched with Brad Osborne, Dorothy Phea- sant tied with Friedel Shaw, Marie Kinnear for third place with 47. Players just below receiv- ing ACBL points were Rae and George Kingsborough with 46; Sheila and Ross Hawkins 43; Geraldine Basketball tryouts Simcoe County Men's Basketball League tryouts will be held at the Midland Secondary School triple gym Thursday, September 17 at 8 p.m. The only criteria to play, other than to possess a little talent, is to be over 18 years of age and be finished school.
