Arts courses popular at local college Three courses sponsored by the North Simcoe Arts Council in association with Georgian College's new Midland campus are almost sold out. This Fall, the arts coun- cil organized the courses as part of an experiment to determine the needs of the local arts community. The success of the courses has encouraged the arts coun- cil to plan on expanding its education program. A calligraphy course, taught by local artist and craftsperson Ruth Fowler, is sold out. Students will be taught basic italic hand- writing, using the broad nibbed pen. Calligraphy is popular with people who make "artistic looking' cards, invitations, posters and scrolls. A fashion crochet course taught by Wyebridge weaver Trish Hines is also sold out. Beginners and craftspeople with some ex- perience can learn the chain, popcorn, single and double crochet and slip stitch. People in the communi- ty who are interested in organizing and teaching a should visit the North Simoce Arts Council office on the second floor of the Budd Watson Gallery on Hugel Ave., Midland. An expanded calendar will be offered in the winter term, co-sponsored by the North Simcoe Arts Council course Course content, organization and guest speakers are decided on by the volunteers teaching the course. The North Simcoe Arts Council and Georgian College provide space and support for the program.
