Hillsdale out-hustles the Firebirds Hillsdale Barrie Auto Glass doubled the @ core on Midland Stoneleigh Firebirds at Herb Beauchamp Memorial Field Thursday night 4-2. The regularly. scheduled Simcoe Rural Fastball League contest featured some ex- cellent plays from both sides. The score actually might have been higher except for some questioned management decisions on the basepaths by Hillsdale. Ex- ample, runner on third, one out, the runner is sent scurrying home on an infield ground- ball to the third baseman. Result, batter is thrown out 5-3 and the runner is doubled up 3-2. The next batter due up (if he got the op- portunity) was three for three. He opened the next inning with his fourth consecutive base hit of the ball game. Hillsdale left seven runners stranded and had another three snuffed on the base paths. Opening the Hillsdale first inning, Rod Greenlaw reached on an error to the Midland Shortstop. Howie McFadden looped a base hit to center field advancing Greenlaw who kept on coming to third. As he was passing second Greenlaw turned his head to watch the centerfielder throw the ball to third and watched it all the way in. As he approached third, he feebly attempted a slide and leaned into the ball, but the sharp-eyed base umpire, John Dickerson was right on the spot and called the runner out for obstruction. Dan Cousineau led off the Midland first with a base hit to right and scored on Ross Weatherell's one-out single to right. Midland kept on rolling in the second as catcher Wilson Cowan stroked a base hit to center and advanced when Paul Hayes laid down a perfect base hit bunt. A double steal ball game. Ronald fanned to end the inning. Mark Ladouceur started for Stoneleigh allowing three runs on eight base hits and walking two. Mike Puddicombe relieved to start the sixth and gave up a run on two base hits, walked a batter and struck out a pair. Mark Ronald received the starting assign- " PODONEHN N Yer out! ment for Hillsdale, but didn't last long as he allowed two runs and four hits in an inning and two thirds. Nick McHugh came in relief and pitched five and a third innings, allow- ing but one base hit, a sixth inning looping triple that fell in between the second baseman and right fielder, walked two batters, hit another and fanned 11. Pitcher, Marc Ladouceur, was safe at first on an error charged to the first baseman, Joe Matheson, to load the bases with still on- ly one out. However, an error in judgement killed the potential rally. Ross Cousineau sent the ball to left field where it was caught for the se- cond out, but the runner from third, Hayes, left too soon and was declared out by the um- pire. In the Hillsdale third, Bill Truax led off with a rap to right and reached second as Rod Greenlaw was walked on a three-and-one count with one out. The game's offensive hero, Howie McFadden drove the ball down the left-field line to score Truax, sending Greenlaw to second. Joe Matheson fouled to the first baseman for the second out before a double steal was successfully completed. Nick McHugh then popped to second to end the inning. The Hustlers continued to threaten in the fourth with back-to-back one-out singles by Mark Ronald and Dan Ball. Bill Truax created out number two with a fly ball to center. Brian Harris worked Ladouceur to a full count (the fourth of the inning) before receiving a free pass to load the bases. But the rally was once again snuffed as Greenlaw popped to Rick Lapansee at third. McFadden and Matheson led off the fifth with singles before pitcher Nick McHugh doubled to left to plate both runners taking a 3-2 lead. Three consecutive fly ball outs end- ed the inning. Beginning the seventh, McFadden sent his third single to left in a row, his fourth overall and then stole second. Randy Greenlaw came in to run for McHugh who received a free pass with one out. Big Greg Wolfenden, whose bat had been silent for the contest up to this point, hit a two and oh pitch to left scoring McFadden with the final run of the ceedings. Action was caught at Herb Hock wins PMCL tennis tourney by Ed Pearson The P.M.C.L. Invitational Tennis Tourna- ment drew high calibre players to the Penetang Memorial Park courts on Saturday. A larger entry was hoped for, especially from Midland but the Wiess brothers, Mike and Peter plus Jim Hughes, were the only Midlanders to register. Committee chairman, Mike Hamelin was bemused, 'Several Midland players cried the blues about miss- ing the event last year, where are they now?" he said. Entries were received from Barrie, Orillia, Coldwater, Elmvale and Victoria Harbour. Six locals from Penetang brought the com- petitors to a very workable 16 players. P.M.C.L. were very generous in sponsor- ship. Each entrant received two passes to the Miss Midland cruise boat, a canvas shopp- ing bag, a cap, two games and a shot at win- ning a trophy and cash prizes of $100 or $50. Four young ladies applied to play but it was decided that at least eight girls were needed to run a separate ladies' section. Darlene was an interested spectator, she was one of the ladies whom had registered. "I am very disappointed, she said, I hope that next year they allow us girls in the men's section, we would find our own level. I know that the other girls feel the same way." Darlene was of the opinion that lady players would draw a bigger crowd. There are counter attractions on a glorious Georgian Bay weekend but the P.M.C.L. event deserves better support from the local tennis community. Those astute enough to at- tend, enjoyed a grand day of tennis. The two seeded players, Joe Hock of Col- dwater and Jim Hamelin of Penetang work- ed their way through the three rounds to ar- rive at the final. Hamelin was last year's win- ner and Hock was fresh off a mixed doubles win at Brewery Bay, Orillia the previous week. Mike Hamelin seemed to have the best serve and attacked thé net, Joe Hock played base line, kept the ball in play and played the more patient game. The first game was close with long rallies and stylish ground strokes from both players. It was extended to 7-5 with the edge going to Joe Hock. The seccnd game Close Match was a duplicate with Hock again getting the nod for a straight two game victory 7-5, 7-5. Brian Dubeau of P.M.C.L. presented Hock with the winner's trophy and cash prize of $100, Hamelin received the runner-up trophy and $50. The consolation final was due to be played on Sunday between Peter Wiess of Midland and Peter Mocha of Victoria Har- bour, but rain prevented play. It will be played at a later date.
