"Obituaries Al Brand by E. Lorraine Orr The sudden death of Al Brand, in his 73rd year, has shocked and saddened the villagers of Coldwater. Mr. Brand was born within the sound of the Bow Bells, in London England. During the 2nd World War he served with the Auxiliary Fire Service and then was transferred to the Canadian Fire Ser- vice in Holland. He migrated to Canada in 1962 and came to Coldwater in 1971. He was a man who lov- ed his village and he serv- ed it well. As a councillor (1977 to 1985) he was responsible for the planing and installa- tion of street numbers on all properties and the erec- tion of proper street signs throughout the village. If something needed to be built or repaired at the Clerk's office or the arena, he was there to do it. The opening of Al's Deli and Restaurant in the village was his pet project and he looked forward to the rapport with his customers. As well as being an ac- tive member of the Col- dwater Lions Club, the Community Centre Board and the Volunteer Firemen, he was also associated with Athron Marine and Mount St. Louis/Moonstone Ski Resort. The Coldwater Hor- ticultural Society benefit- ted continuously from his talents. Although he always answered our re- quests with his cockneyed "No way!" he would build flower beds, print and erect signs and set up for flower shows. He was a member of the founding committee of the Coldwater Senior Citizens Apartments and served as secretary for the board of directors from 1981 to 1986. The flagpole he built and erected for the apartment' grounds flew its flag at half mast last week in honour of him. You will be missed my friend!
