2 Rained-out events Two community events were cancelled on Sunday because of rain. In Midland, the Contact Information Centre's Big Wheelie Bike-a-thon was scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at the Huronia Mall. VON meeting The 33rd annual meeting of the Victorian Order of Nurses will be held in Toronto June 13. From the Simcoe County branch, president Paul Mills of Vic- toria Harbour will repre- sent the Board of Manage- ment, and its executive director, Ms. Beth McDonald, will represent the nursing staff. Other board members attending will be Charles Styles of Midhurst and Dan Arnoldi of Barrie. The theme of the meeting will be VON - The future is ours. The Victorian Order of Nurses has had a long and distinguished history in Canada and celebrated its 90th anniversary this year. Founded in 1897 by Lady Aberdeen, wife of the Earl of Aberdeen (then Governor-General of Canada) it now has 33 branches in Ontario alone. Join Wye Marsh naturalists for weekend walks in June, and you'll find how easy it is to distinguish birds by sight, song and shape. Starting June 6 and 7, as part of the Environment Week celebrations, Wye Marsh staff will lead bird discovery walks into the woodlands and wetlands at the wildlife centre. Bird walks begin at 10 a.m. Dozens of species of common and rare birds are in the area now, says Eva Kaiser, Program Director at the Marsh. "Many people enjoy wat- ching birds at the bird- feeder in the winter," says Kaiser, "and would like to carry on, but don't know how to identify the new spring arrivals. It's easy once they're pointed out to you.' -- Bring your binoculars if you have them - it opens up a whole new world of birdwatching. You're likely to see the striking rose-breasted grosbeak, the Eastern Kingbird, the veery, yellow-throated warblers, Northern Orioles, and the rare Caspianh Tern, just to name a few. At 2 p.m. on weekends, discovery continues with guided wildflower walks. Roy Tyo of the OPP, the downpour forced organizers to reschedule the bike-a-thon to next Sun- day - same time, same place. Meanwhile, over in Vic- | toria Harbour, the village walk-a-thon sufferred the same fate. Even though it was scheduled for 1 p.m. when Pa the rain seemed to slow down a bit, organizers decided to reschedule it for June 14. Again, the event is scheduled for the same time - 1 p.m. Anyone wishing more information about the walk-a-thon should call Judy at 534-3447.
