The Russ Howard rink won the Ontario Challenge round, the Tankard, the Brier and finally the World's Championships. Now they have completed the sweep by winning the Penetang Club Championship. While they were showing a clean pair of heels to the rest of the world, the club championship had to be put on the back burner. On Tuesday evening, the unfinished business was attended to. The Ice-maker, Howard the Elder, had carefully preserved a sheet of ice from the club's family skating party the previous Sunday. The ice was not perfect but infinatley better than the ice in Vancouver. Thie opponents for the Club Championship were no curling cannon- fodder. Larry Merkley, Russ's fifth man, had Bob Rushton at vice, Martin Robillard at se- cond and Al McLinton at lead. The Russ Howard foursome was complete, except for Glenn who was all curled out and curled up in bed with a severe case of the wobblies. Everyone on the lower deck was promoted. Kent went to Chief Stoker. Tim became first Mate and Russ sailed on with a reduced crew. There was a full house behind the glass to watch the classic encounter and they saw a good one. Larry managed to keep it close for the first five ends but Russ started to pull away in the sixth. Finally Larry conceded in the eighth with the score standing at eight to two. A fitting end to a great season. It is only natural that Russ and his rink would be feeling a bit curled out after the strain of very intense competition over the past several months. The Olympic trials are an indisposition upon them and must come as an anticlimax after all their achievements. Lets hope that they can raise themselves above a system that is slanted against them. I can think of no rink that is more worthy than they to represent Canada in the Olympics. performance. James Ferguson tallied 17 points and Shane Nicol added 10 for Hoyas.
