The need is great: one in 10 women endure physical, sexual or emo- tional abuse at home. Most are too frightened or depressed to seek help. Many are unaware that help exists. "We can't just wait for women to come to us," said Polly Sharp, Project Manager, "'we're develop- ing new education and outreach programs so more people can be helped". Sharp is in charge of four new workers at Rosewood, hired under a Federal Job We have-available: LIVELIEST PLANTS # Easter Friday April 17th Development grant: a child care worker, a native worker, a_ transition worker and a fundraiser. "Ail these positions are so important - all absolute- ly necessary to the function of Rosewood," said Sharp. "We hope that the pro- vince will take them on permanently when the grant ends." Founded in late 1985, as an emergency shelter for women and their children who are homeless through marital violence' or domestic crisis, Rosewood is funded mostly by the province. "We must raise 20 per cent of expenses ourselves; OPEN thru Monday April 20 inclusive Easter Lillies, Hydrangeas, Potted Mums, Azaleas, Mixed Pots, Hanging Baskets, Geraniums, Potted Cuttings. Often filled to capacity, Rosewood sometimes has to improvise accomoda- tions, with offices doubling as bedrooms at night. To meet the growing need, the shelter is expanding physically, adding four new bedrooms on the third floor. Community fun- draising will help with the cost of renovations. "April 15 to May 15 has been procliamed Family Violence Prevention Month," said Sharp, "'and we hope to see an increas- ed awareness of the pro- blem of abuse. We hope more women will hear about our services and con- tact us if they need help in a crisis or someone to talk tos? Rosewood is open day and night.
