Curling pleasure Ed Pearson It was my pleasure to be included in the Bill Howard Penetang rink for the Minard"s Liniment O.C.A. District Seniors' Playdowns last week-end. Mel Wright was the lead stone, yours truly mas- queraded at second, Bob Maurice played vice, Bill, of course skippered. We dropped the first game on Saturday morning to the eventual winners of the A side, the fine Glenn Patterson Rink of Barrie. they made short work of their next two opponents, and as winners of the A automatically qualified for the playdowns which will take place at the Midland Curl- ing Club next week-end. We dropped down to the B side and found ourselves involved in some pretty good country curling. It was easy to become in- timidated by the badges on the arms of most of the curlers, District and zone playdown winners were very thick on the ground, we were in good company. Bill dragged us through two winning games and we found ourselves in the semi-finals which. were played at ten bells Sunday morning. After three 10 end games, a hot bath, a rub down with the spon- sors excellent product was definitely called for. Sunday morning found us facing the Ken Windrem rink from Orillia. Penetang lost the toss, and the rinks side, zone by Ron Gibbons The weekend provided a couple of satisfying exhibi- tion games for Midland IGA hockey Atoms of the Midland houseleague as they defeated Elmvale No.2, 7-3 Sunday night following a 2-2 tie with Creemore earlier in the weekend. Against Elmvale, Kirk Dagenais started the scor- ing for his team with a pair. He was followed by jeremy Cadeau and _ Steven Stoneman. Elmvale scorers were Jeff Pickering with two and Danny Wilkie. Against Creemore, Kevin Lunnie shared the scoring with brother Brent. Scott Cameron was the goalie in both games. Creemore scorers were Ed Vanservan and Allan Midall. In other atom action, Lit- tle Generals downed visiting Penetang PMCL 3-0 and Orillia clipped Realty World 4-3. Jason Latour led the Generals scoring with two. Keith Robinson got the other. Troy Quesnelle got the shutout. Realty World got all their goals from Sean Brooks. Orillia scorers were Tyler King, Lindsay Briggs and Ryan Knapp who tallied twice, including the winner. In peewee _ action Midland Police dumped Midland Times 9-0 and John's Catering defeated Cowan's Construction 7-4. Police scorers were Spencer Warren, Sean Waltenbury and Sean Lavin each with two, Shawn Arthurs, Mike Besley and Tyler Gravel with singles. John's scorers traded singles in the first two ends. Penetang fell from grace and conceded three in the third. We recouped two in the next end, but Orillia were not about to allow us any more latitude than that. Come the tenth end, we were tied at six points each. We had taken five ends but they had the hammer. It was trouble city. After four rocks each, we had one buried on the four foot, but Jack Hurl for Orillia made a picture double take-out to rob us of the initiative. Ken Windrem put the icing on Orillia's cake with a skilled draw to the button with his last rock. Penetang exited on a 7-6 loss and Orillia entered the final against Brock Stackhouse from the Barrie Essa Road Club. Orillia was unable to maintain their standard of ex- cellence in the final which turned out to be anti- climatic as Ken Windrem was obliged to shake hands on the ninth end. It was almost as pleasant behind the glass watching the final with characters like Cold Draw Magraw and some of the other senators, as it was out on the ice. You can catch some of the action yourselves next week-end at the Midland Curling Club. This district will have some worthy representatives in the Glenn patterson and Brock Stackhouse rinks. were Dave O'Hara and Scott Cooper with two apiece with singles from Rodney Land, Shawn French and Dan Reidel. Cowan's scoring was done by Jay MacKell, Mike Adamson, Steven Lalonde and Adam Deacon. In bantams, Midland Free Press and Wye Heritage played to a 4-4 tie with Free Press goals being netted by jesse Perreault who had two, John Marion and Sean Armstrong. Chad Brown tallied three times for Wye Heritage and the other tally came from Mike In the clutch This young lady seems to be pleading for assistance to escape the clutches of Kim Peacock, ice maker at Midland Curling Club. Cents Good weekend for IGA Atoms Waltenbury. Free Press also played in Collingwood, coming away with an 8-4 decision on the efforts of Ivan Gravel and John Marion, each of whom tallied twice, Jesse Perreault, Stu Player, Sean Armstrong and Peter Datambel. Chris White notched three for Mr. Submarine while solos came from Bob Richardson and Shawn McGuire. Pah Pah Bonspiel.
