Page 12, Tuesday, January 27, 1987 Peewees lose Penetanguishene Drift- wood Major Peewees saw a lot of hockey action over the past week and although there were no victories to claim, they played some spirited hockey never- theless. As the league schedule gears down, Driftwood has only one game left to play and it will be on the road in Midland next week. Play-offs are just around the corner. Last Tuesday Driftwood almost made theif biggest comeback of the year against Collingwood, but fell short as a late goal by the visitors stole a tie from the boys. Collingwood began the game with one quick goal less than two minutes into the game and then added a second just before the end of the first period to stake themselves to a 2-0 lead. However, at the 1:04 mark of the se- cond, Tim Mason found the net when his shot blistered past the Coll- ingwood goalie. Mason was set up by Tim Maheu who played an especially strong game throughout this contest. With the score now 2-1, Collingwood struck for the next goal before Tim Maheu scored the first of his three goals for the evening to narrow the gap at 3-2, after he was assisted by both Mason and Billy Leonard. A brief defensive lapse by Penetang allowed Coll- ingwood to score the next three goals and at the break, it was 6-2 for the visitors. Driftwood staged _ a valiant comeback in the third as they scored four unanswered goals to tie the game at 6-6. Scoring for Driftwood were Maheu with his second, from Mason and Leonard once again, Francois Charlebois, with two both from Adrian Maurice, and finally Maheu completed his hat trick at the 10:54 mark of the third when he tipped in a loose puck in the goal crease. Both Mason and Leonard were credited with assists on the goal. Unfortunately for Drift- wood, Collingwood were able to score their only goal of the period with just 42 seconds remaining in the game and this was all they needed to win by a 7-6 score. i On Wednesday Drift- wood played the Midland Peewees in Midland and although they came up short on the losing end of a 6-3 game, they played Bath scores five Cory Bath's seven point performance paced Bike Shop to a 9-0 victory over ReMax and a four point lead atop the Midland houseleague novice division. In other Midland Minor Hockey Association novice play, Bougeois Cougars regained a share of second- place by defeating Dynas- ty Inn 5-1 while Mr. Sub- marine downed visiting Creemore 7-1. In the tyke division, Stoneleigh nipped Jory's IDA 5-3 while Meatland clipped Bertram's 2-1. In the Bike Shop victory, Bath scored five goals and one each were scored by Chad Thayer, Chris Pauze, Richard Quesnelle and Joey Clifford. well, relatively speaking, and were in the game save for the first five minutes. Midland opened the scoring on their first shift, and then scored two more goals by the mid-way point of the period. Initially, it looked like a romp, but steady goal-tending by Claude Vallee and Scott Galt kept Driftwood in the game. Penetang's Tim "Mason scored his team's first goal after being set up by Tim Maheu, but Midland replied with a goal of their own to restore their three goal lead at 4-1. Chris Marchildon narrow- ed the score to 4-2 in the se- cond period, but once. again Midland scored to take a 5-2 lead. In the third period, Midland went up by a 6-2, but Driftwood's Francois Charlebois made a pretty individual rush and scored his team's final goal of the game with only five minutes remaining. A few missed opportunities for Driftwood prevented them from tieing the game, But nevertheless, they had their chances in this con- test and they played a good game by holding Midland's strong offense to only six goals. Over the weekend, Drift- wood played a home and home series with Owen Sound, but came out on the losing end in both contests. On Saturday the boys travelled to Owen Sound and despite playing some good hockey they couldn't manage to contain the home-town team and the game ended 6-4. Scoring for Driftwood were Adrian Maurice with two and singles Maheu and Dwayne Johnson. Assists on Maurice's goals went to Chris Marchildon on the first and to Francois Charlebois on the second. Maheu's goal was assisted by Johnson and Shawn McConkey. Johnson's goal was set McConkey and Charlebois. In the return match in Penetang on Sunday Owen Sound had less trouble in , this game as they won in convincing fashion by a 7-3 , score. The first period re- mained close and Drift- wood was in the game un- til the beginning of the se- cond period when Owen } Sound scored _ four unanswered goals to take a 6-2 that help up until the third. Final score was 7-3 for Owen Sound. Aaron Dorion's three goal effort paced Bougeois with singles from Brandon MacKell and _ Sean Cousineau, Jason Gibbons replied for Dynasty. Mr. Submarine's Shawn McGuire tallied four times, while solos came from Bob Richardson, Chris White and Corby Lesperance. Jory's Jeremy Sauve, Doug Reid and Shawn Pat- terson gave their team a 3-1 | victory before the Stoneleigh rally.
