le a, 3€ et A abe Ve --Sports Scene Oro 77's slaughter Kings 9 - 6 Penetang Junior C Kings suffered a 9 - 6 loss at the hands of Oro 77's Friday night at Penetang Arena in Georgian Bay Junior C Hockey League action. Penetang was outscored 3 - 2 in each of the three periods. The seesaw battle saw Penetang draw to within one with two minutes and 10 seconds remaining in the game. The Kings also en- joyed a man advantage situation, but a pair of short handed goals by Bill Campbell within 44 seconds quickly decided the outcome of the contest. Tom Horne put Oro on the board at 1:12 of the opening 20 minutes, only to have Penetang tie the score at 7:16 as Mike Brunelle found the range from Scott Boyd and Brad Clugston. Steve Parsons replied for Oro 15 seconds later, but Wayne Desjardins connected on a solo effort to draw the teams once again. Steve Ingram struck for the first of three to end the scoring in the period and lift Oro to a 3 - 2 lead. Ingram clicked for his second marker of the game with a goal at the 42 second mark to open the second stanza. Wayne Desjardins History repeated History repeated itself for the Russ Howard foursome last weekend at the Ontario Regional Curling Championships held in Stroud. Last year, Howard encountered many difficulties at the regionals and was forced to work his way along the playoff trail in search of the Briar by taking the Challenge Round route; the same way he took last year. In their five games Howard won three and lost two. The two losses were at the hands of provincially ranked curlers. Paul Savage and Gary Smockum. Howard felt as a team that although they didn't curl that poorly, they were 10 - 15 per cent below where they should have been. Howard found the ice tricky and slow but stated that he felt he didn't read the ice properly. Howard now will test the waters in the challenge round in Hairieton January 29 to February 2 where 16 teams will fight it out to move on to the provincials to be held in Chatham in February. responded at 3:21 with assists going to Mark Dubeau and Rob Desroches. Two minutes later, Oro added to their lead as Vic Shepherd found the mark. However, Dan Archer brought the Kings to within one at 5 - 4 with help from Desroches and Sean Dowanik at 17:02. Ingram completed his hat trick for Oro with 45 seconds left on the clock. Mark D'Ambrosio presented Oro with a three goal lead to start off the third at 1:19, before Penetang struck for two in a row. Mike Magloughlin tallied at 7:32 from Mike Brunelle and Paul Steele, while Wayne Des- jardins drew Penetang to within one at the 8:15 mark, making the score 7 - 6 Oro. But Bill Campbell saved the day for Oro with a pair of short handed markers at 17:49 and 18:33. Last stand Midland Stoneleigh Centennial defenceman Kevin Hubbard, number 24, prepares to take out the Stayner Siskin forward as he crosses the Blue line into Midland territory in Georgian Bay Junior C Hockey action Friday night at Centennial Arena. Midland lost the contest 10 - 5 to the front running Stayner Siskins. Midland remains in second place. Williams foursome wins regional championship Midland's Keith Williams came up big on the weekend by winning the B side in the On- tario Regional curling playdowns in Stroud. Williams won five and lost just one. Friday night, the Williams foursome enter- tained John Smurthwaite of Stroud and were up two coming home and picked up two more. Siskins double Cents League leading Stayner Siskins scored six straight goals in the second period enroute to a 10 - 5 drubbing of the Midland Stoneleigh Centennials in Georgian Bay Junior C Hockey League action Friday night at Centennial Arena. John Smith gave Midland the lead at 8:08 of the opening frame, with help from Daryl Belcourt and Glen McDermott. Stayner's Brent Milsap replied 30 seconds later, but The Cents regained the lead with a marker off the stick of Brent Insley at the 14:07 mark on the power play with Chris Edwards and Jeff Douglas. Rob Swanton knotted the score 38 seconds later, sending both teams to the dressing rooms tied at two. Both teams went to the dressing rooms, but it appeared that only one returned to the ice as Stayner slammed six straight pucks past two Midland goaltenders. Dave Ritchie fired the first two at 2:47 and 4:12, while Terry McEachern greeted new goaltender Blain Dusome nine seconds later after Kevin Clark removed himself from the Midland net. Bryan Trott continued the onslaught at 7:18, while Terry McEachern connected with his second of the period and second of the game at 13:44. Tom McIntyre upped the score to 8 - 2 three minutes later before Midland final- ly answered with a tally off the stick of Daryl Belcourt on the power play with Dave Bressette and Pat Marchand at 18:59. Midland played a more disciplined game in the third, outshooting their guests 18 - 16 and matching them in goals with two each. Ritchie completed the hat trick at the 15 se- cond mark, but Archie Meridis popped one in behind the league's leading goaltender, Mark Dineen at the 4:07 mark from Jeff Douglas and Bressette. Belcourt scored a shorthanded goal at 13:16 unassisted, but Bryan Trott completed the scoring at 14:55 on the power play. Stayner outshot Midland 47 - 44 on the contest. Saturday morning, Williams nipped Brad- ford's Bill Bennett in a close match. Williams felt that they could have curled better in the first two matches. The third encounter was with Paul Savage of Gravenhurst who picked up three in the first end and stole three more in the second, prompting the Williams foursome to pack it in after four ends being behind 9 - 1. Sunday morning the Williams foursome, comsisting of Mark Goodman, lead, Dennis Gignac, second, and Ron Frankcom, vice, took on the Bob Storey rink of Elmvale and engaged in yet another close encounter of the curling kind. Williams was tied 3 - 3 coming home with the hammer, and he took the single point for the victory. Williams had to play tough in his noon hour game with Gary Smockum of Barrie. Williams was up one coming home in the tenth end and was successful in drawing against two with the hammer to move on to the final confrontation of the weekend in an effort to move on to the next rung on the cur!l- ing ladder. Sunday night's game with Bob Denny of Barrie proved to be just as nerve racking as the other games. Once again the game was tight with Williams finally getting a break in the ninth end, Coming into the end up one, he was able'to steal a pair and coast to the victory. Williams now will advance to the next round January 17 and 18 in Elmvale involv- ing eight teams. The winner of Elmvale goes directly to the provincial championships.
