an OE TES I MSS girls cop title The midget girl's basket- ball team from Midland Secondary School won the Georgian Bay Champion- ship in Barrie last Satur- day. The girls had previously won the Simcoe County Championship a week earlier, beating Stayner by 23 points and Eastview by 33 points. They had reached their peak at the Simcoe Championships. They were ripe for an upset. The girls had to write exams; they were playing the same teams; it was a strange gym with glass backboards; and the girls were a little lethargic and overconfident. Stayner came out with a vengeance, out-hustling MSS on rebounds and defence. Stayner led by one at the end of. the third quarter. The Midland girls were asked to provide more pressure and hustle and they responded with a 32 - 23 win. Denise Greenwood led MSS scorers with nine points and the rest of the starters - Julie Richardson, Jennifer Balabuck, Janet Lewis, Shari Jeffrey, and Brenda Kennedy had five points each. Stayner could definitely not key on one player. Natalie Chenier came off the bench and of- fered some fine defence and driving lay ups. The Eastview game took the same course of events with Eastview leading by one point going into the final quarter. Again the Midland girls rallied and defeated the Eastview squad 44 - 35. The girls definitely proved that they were the champs with their last minute desire. Denise Greenwood led the scorers with 14 points, followed by Janet Lewis with seven points. Jennifer Balabuck, Julie Richardson ~ and Nicole Patterson outre- bounded the _ taller Eastview squad in the se- cond half and added five points each. Natalie Chenier, Lori Kirdikis, Lorri Banks, and Denise Leduc provided some time- ly foul shots and hustling defence. Sharon Graham, Jane Arque, Megan Strachan and Maria Utilight provided the sup- port for a fine season. Con- gratulations MSS Midget Girls.
