On Friday, Oct. 24 in Elmvale, the Driftwood Pee Wees squeaked out a 2 - 1 victory to stretch their exhibition play record to 2 and 2. Jesse Bazinet open- ed the scoring at the 5:22 mark of the second period to give Penetang an early 1 - 0 lead. David Brooks was credited with the assist after working hard in the corner to get the puck out to Bazinet. Chris Mar- childon made it 2 - 0 after being set up by line-mates Jesse Bazinet and Tim Mason at the 11:25 mark of the second period. Elmvale's Joe Vanhaarhouven rounded out the scoring with only :58 seconds left in the third period to spoil the shut-out bid by Penetang goalies Scott Galt and Claude Vallee who both played well for Driftwood. On Sunday, Oct. 26, Driftwood Pee Wees travelled to Collingwood to play their first regular season game in G.B.M.H.A. league play. The local team were a bit unorganized in the first six "minutes of the game and before you could say Howie Meeker three times, Collingwood struck for three quick goals. Having their backs to the prover- bial wall, Driftwood Pee Wees demonstrated character by replying with three goals of their own to tie the game just before the end of the second period. Not only did they show their offensive power, but they scored two of these goals when shorthanded! Once again, it was Jesse Bazinet who scored Penetang's first goal on a pretty pass from cen- treman Tim Mason who drew the assist as did Ray- mond Dupuis. Less than two minutes later, it was Raymond Dupuis who scored his team's second goal on a hard blast from the point after being fed the puck by David Beausoleil from the corner. Adrian Maurice made it 3 - 3 just minutes later as he was set up in the slot by both Billy Leonard and David Brooks. With only six seconds left in the se- cond period, Collingwood went ahead 4 - 3 and took this lead into the third. Early in the third, Drift- wood's. Chris Diesveld scored a well-earned goal by working hard in the cor- ner and then when he pass- ed it out to the slot, the puck hit the Collingwood goalie's pad and deflected into the net to tie the game at 4 - 4. Adrian Maurice scored his second goal of the game mid-way through the period to give Penetang its first lead of the game with only six minutes left. Not to be outdone, Coll- ingwood tied the score three minutes later, but it was Driftwood's Kirk Ruston who scored what appeared to be the winner with only 1:44 left on the clock. Collingwood's Tyler Lanktree tied the game at Nin, Where 's my stickum? Flyers' Glen Johnson grimaces as he attempts to hold onto the ball during Sunday's Touch Football action at MSS. The regular season has been completed and Bell Canada team hot in opener Midland Bell Canada Minor Peewees opened their 1986-87 Georgian Bay Minor Hockey Association season with a 4-3 win over Stayner Friday night at Wasaga Beach. Ryan Walser opened the scoring for Midland with the only tally of the first frame at 2:12 when he con- verted a Ryan Descham- bault pass. Adam Bourgeois made it 2-0 for Bell Canada with an unassisted tally at 12:22 of the second stanza before Stayner came back with a pair of goals within a minute to knot the score at 2-2. However, with just over three minutes remain- ing in the period, Troy ESPSS faces MSS in by Laura Grabinsky Last Monday, high schools from Penetangui- shene and Midland met to match their basketball skills on the 'Skins homecourt. The ESPSS Seniors ex- perienced an unfortunate defeat at the hands of Midland Secondary School by a score of 43 - 28. The Opening quarter was a neck in neck battle bet- ween the girls but MSS held a lead of 9 - 8. At the end of the first half though, the Marauders had climb- ed ahead of the Red Skins five points leaving the score 17 - 12. The rest of the game was in the oppos- ing teams hands. The strong players who gave the game their best ef- forts were Ruby Degenaar with 16 points and Cathy Pilon and Monique Hamelin with six each. Last Saturday (Oct. 18) the Senior 'Skins made it to the finals when they com- peted in another tourna- ment at Barrie Central. Their first win was against Thornlea, by a score of 44 - 22. The second game against St. Joseph's of Barrie was extremely close but the 'Skins managed to sneak by, winning it 21 - 20. The third and final game was a defeat for the Penetang girls with Brock winning 47 - 39. 6.- 6 with only 36 seconds remaining in the game after catching Penetang's rearguards up ice in the dy- ing moments of the game. Once all the smoke had cleared, the game ended in a tie giving each team one point in the league stan- dings after their firs. playoffs will be held next Awards will be handed out following the 'A' Division Final game which begins at 12:30 p.m. at PSS. Caley teamed up with David Ferris to give Midland a lead they would not relinquish. The first scheduled home game for Midland will be Sun- day, November 2 against Elmvale at 4:30 p.m. play Monday The Junior lady 'Skins are doing exceptionally well this season, wjnning five out of six games so far. The Midland Marauders were good competition for the PSS team but they lost out 45 - 41 last Monday. The Junior basketball team held the lead throughout the game, ending the first half by a ten point spread of 26 - 16. JoAnne Robitaille, who was unable to play the previous game due to in- jury, was back in action scoring 11 points with Julie Morrison netting nine. Keep it up girls! In midget play, it was another bad game for the Midget 'Skins when they suffered a major loss to MSS of 75 - 15. After the first quarter the lady 'Skins knew they were up against tough competition when the Marauders lead the game by a score of 22 - 1. Tuesday, October 28, 1986, Page 23
