First woman installed by Martin Lalonde For the first time ever, since the inception of the Penetanguishene Richelieu Club, a woman has been welcomed into the ranks of the organization * for French speaking business people. At their regular business meeting on Oct. 14, club members initiated Marlene Theberge into the Pene- tanguishene group. For the last 23 years membership has_ been limited to men only. Last year however, following a discussion concerning the homogeneous status of the club, members agreed that ladies not only could, but should, be encouraged to become statutory members. Theberge lives in Crosslands and works in the City of Barrie for the Ministry of Citizenship and Culture. The club's newest recruit will enrich the local membership by contributing her ex- periences gained in Quebec, the Maritimes and her native northern Ontario. Theberge's admission in- to the club opens the doors to other ladies wishing to joining the French speak- ing business people's organization. The aim of the group is to build per- sonal confidence and to foster communication on a social level with other fran- cophones in the workforce. Dinner meetings are held every second and fourth Tuesday of each month at the Centre D'Activites Francaises in Pene- tanguishene. The club has sponsored a variety of local activities in the past. Monies collected from fun- draising are redirected in- to the community to en- courage children, mostly to enjoy French cultural activities. The Richelieu Club has been active in Winterama events, public speaking contests, orthographic competitions, Christmas dances and the annual Health Walk for the Pene- tanguishene General Hospital.
