Cents capture weekend with win Follow the leader Midland Stoneleigh Centennial player at- tempts to carry the puck out of his zone as he is checked from behind by a Gravenhurst Indian. Goaltender Blain Dusome prepares to help out during Sunday's fixture at Centen- nial Arena. Top teams battle for play The tirst game at MSS saw the Brooklea Eagles swoop past the scoreless Toros by a whitewash of 42 - 0. John Koppenol moved up into first-place on the scoring ladder as he hauled in two majors and two two point conversions on tosses from Q.B. Don Meech. Meech also found John Pickett for two ma- jors. Ken and Brad Marchildon picked up the other two majors on passes also from Meech. Ernie Desroches crossed the goal line to snag a two point conversion as he crawls up into seventh spot in the scoring race. The Toros were stagnant and nothing would click for them as the Eagles proved to be too powerful and dominated on every play. The second game at MSS was a squeeker as the Redskins and Destroyers battled it out 19 - 18 and the Destroyers proved to be the - winners. Roy Freer came up big for the win- ners with two majors to puch him up into third spot in the scoring race with four points. M. Thomson snagged a pass from Q.B. Ron Tucker to pick up his first T.D. of the season. Jack Yerek picked up the single point to round out the scoring for the Destroyers. The Redskins' Glen Bannon, who has quickly moved up in the scoring race to ninth spot, picked up two majors on throws from Q.B. Andy Wicksted.~Bill Hartman snagged the other major for the Skins as this game proved to be one of the better matched games of the day. The Destroyers win puts them in a three way tie with the Skin's and Neb's Flyers for sixth spot but for fourth place. The Huronia Optical Illusions blew past the Giants by a whipping of 34 - 6. This moved the Illusions into third spot but a tie for se- cond place with the Eagles. The Giants are eliminated from the playoffs and hold 11th spot in the standings. Scoring the lone ma- jor for the Giants, was Mark Contois as he picked up his first T.D. of the year. The scor- ing for the Ilfusions was spread around as Frank Pauze, Gary Straughn, and Rick Desroches picked up sole majors and Lorny Morulla and Swicker Pauze snagged a T.D. and a two point conversion each. All passes were thrown by Q.B. John Larmand as he threw for several big completions to lead his team to a big win. The first game at PSS saw the Dial-a-Movie Strikers whitewash the winless Mick B's Renegades by the tune of 20 - 0. The win moves the Strikers into ninth spot as they must win their next outing and hope the Toros lose as they hold down the 8th and last spot for the playoffs. If the Strikers win and Toros lose, there are only seven points dif- ference in points and they must score more than seven points because this decides the final spot. Dave Rutherford had a big game for the Strikers as he grabbed two passes from Q.B. Randy Butineau to score majors. Randy Buttineau also found Brian Hook in the end zone as he completed the other ma- jor. Tom Powell picked up the two point con- version on a nice completion in the end zone. The OPSEU Terminators lost a close one to the Neb's Flyers as they scored in the final minute of play to win 6 - 1. Ken Wright punted the lone single point into the end zone as his team held off the Flyers until the final minute. The Terminators played tough defense as they held off the Flyers from scor- ing on their 11 and 5 yard lines on seperate possessions. Fred Lorette scored the game winning T.D. on a 15 yard pass from Q.B. Doug Edwards. Edwards layed up some nice tosses but his receivers could not dominate on any major receptions. The Hawks and the Outlaws fought a close match, but the first place Outlaws came out on top by a score of 14 - 8. The Hawks prop- ped to fourth place with nine points and the Outlaws stay in first with 13 points. Morris Robitaille, who had lead the league in the scoring race, dropped to second place with 68 points, two points behind John Keppenol of the Eagles who has 70. Robitaille picked up a T.D. ona toss from Q.B. Mike Hamelin. Peter Robillard hauled in a T.D. and a single point conversion as Ray Gadouray picked up the other single point conversion to hold him in a tie with 26 points in the scoring race. Robitaille didn't score big, but caught several nice passes to gain big yardage for the Outlaws. Joe Beausoleil also had several big gains for the Outlaws as he ran for over 50 yards on separate plays. Pierre Genier, who continues to climb up Midland Stoneleigh Centennials capped a 12-4 Friday victory with a 6-3 Sunday even- ing win over Gravenhurst Indians at Centen- nial Arena. Midland jumped into a 2-0 first period lead, extending it to 5-1 after 40 minutes. Dave Bressette staked Midland to a quick lead with a goal at the 30 second mark assisted by Archie Meridis and John Smith. Jeff Douglas made the score 2-0 with a marker at 6:40 on a play with Meridis and Guy Jeannotte. Douglas fired his second of the contest at 4:20 of the second, once again assisted by Meridis. Steve Maheu finally put Gravenhurst on the board at 10:19, but Midland replied less than a minute later on a short handed effort. Pat Marchand teamed up with Rob Fortin and Chris Edwards on the power play to up the score to 5-1 to end the second period. Kelly Jones and Rob Crough notched singles in the third for the Indians to come within a pair of the Cents, but Blain Dusome in the Midland net turned them away from that point on. Archie Meridis recorded the final Centennial tally at 18:25 with an unassisted short handed goal. Midland were outshot in the contest 43-28. After the game, General Manager/Coach, Ross McConnell expressed disappointment in his team's performance, despite the win. McConnell felt that the team came to the rink with the wrong attitude and took for granted that a win was in the bag. The team appeared elated after Friday's 12-4 win in Penetang, ac- cording to McConnell. However, one bright spot for McConnell was the outstanding play of Blain Dusome, the goal guardian of the Midland net. off position the scoring ladder with 32 points, picked up the lone T.D. for the Hawks. Keith Maracle snagged a pass from his brother, Q.B. Peter Maracle, who threW several nice bombs to his receivers throughout the day. The Hawks played head to head with the Outlaws as they led in the first half, but lost a close well played game. : Next Sunday finalizes regular season play as teams battle it out to place in one of the eight playoff spots. Playoffs begin on Sat., Nov. 1 and continue on into Sun., Nov. 2 as the season winds down {or yet another year. Kings squashed Penetang Junior C Kings travelled to Creemore Saturday evening to face Stayner Siskins in Georgian Bay Junior C Hockey regular season action and came away with a disappointing 11-5 loss. Stayner, on the heels of three power play goals, led 4-3 after the first 20 minutes and added three more in the second stanza to lead 7-3 after two periods. Siskins doubled the Kings 4-2 in the final frame. Friday night's loss to the Centennials, plus the rather questionable officiating Saturday, perhaps led to Penetang's second period let down. Stayner was assessed 23 minutes in penalties to 40 minutes for the Kings. Steve Bauchman scored for the Kings in the first frame at 15:10 on the power play, assisted by Paul Bumstead and Don Monteith. Mark Dubeau connected on another power play at 5:30 with Monteith and Wayne Desjardins. Bauchman scored Penetang's third goal on a short handed ef- fort with Bill Beauchamp and Perry Beausoleil assisting at 4:47. The Kings led 3-2 at this point. Gary Lynch tallied a pair of markers in the third frame. The first was a short handed ef- fort, unassisted at 14:37. At the 8:00 mark, he 'teamed up with Monteith and Mike Magloughlin. - Penetang were outshot 57-24 and six of the 11 goals scored against them were power play markers. thruway mufflercentre SCORE BOARD vd is) Penetang Midland Touch Football League Sunday's Results Eagles 42, Toros 0 Destroyers 19, Redskins 18 Illusions 34, Giants 6 Strikers 20, Mick Bs 0 Flyers 6, OPSEU 1 Outlaws 14, Hawks 8 end of regular schedule Simcoe County Men's Basketball Wed.
