The birds of prey This Giants player divers on the ball s the Hawks swarm in during Touch Football ac- tion Sunday at MSS. Hawks won easily 18 - 6. Want to start a tennis club The Penetanguishene Recreation Depart- ment would like to hear from anyone who might be interested in developing a Tennis Club. We had a very good club for a number of years when we had the old courts at Memorial Park. It was tried for one year recently but with very little success. With the quality of courts which we have available it seems a shame that a very active club should not be forthcoming. Please call me at 549-8492 if you think you would be interested. The "A" Team Tournament held on Sept. 26, 27, 28 was a great success. The sixteen teams competing showed a good quality of play with a team from Orillia being the even- tual winner. Congratulations to the "A" Team on putting on a very good tournament. Speaking of tournaments the next one to be held at the Arena will be the Oldtimers Tour- nament again with sixteen teams competing. This is to be held on Oct. 24, 25,26. Come out and see the game played with excellent com- petition but a little slower pace. Just a reminder that our three (3) organiz- ed Legues all started play last weekend. The Rec. Hockey League plays Sunday mornings commencing at 9:30 a.m. The Geo. Bay Men's out and see these games being played, I'm sure you will enjoy yourself. Public Skating started Friday, October 3rd, and will be held Friday, October 10, 1986. Sunday skating will not start until Oct. 19, 1986. Midland's Schmidt finishes top 10 Gunther Schmidt came from 20th spot to finish ninth Sunday at Mont Tremblant in the Canadian Racing Championships. Schmidt, who came down with the flu on Wednesday and Thursday, experienced some more bad Schmidt racing Gunther Schmidt's Volkswagen Rabbit before crashing at Mont Tremblant at the Buick Grand Nationals in Quebec on Sunday. ing around the track at about 180 kph on a wet and slick track the volkswagen rabbit hit a guard rail and crashed causing an estimated $2500 in damages to the vehicle. However, Schmidt worked through the night along with his brother to repair the damages well enough Schmidt placed ninth out of 28 drivers from Canada and the U.S. to race on Sunday. It took the pair 25 hours to get the vehicle in racing condition. The rear axel was bent, two fenders were severe- ly damaged and had to be repaired with rac- ing tape, two wheels were broken, and the front suspension was out of whack. Schmidt, for his part, was virtually unhurt in the scary crash, but did suffer some whiplash. The duo finished the job 10 minutes before race time on Sunday, only to find that the car was not running properly after all their ef- torts. But it was too late to make any other adjustments; Schmidt had to drive it the way it was. The rear wheel was on an angle, mak- ing the car virtually steer itself around the corners. Schmidt started 20th out of 28 cars and made it to ninth with an average speed of 130 kilometers per hour. The winner, from Sur- rey, B.C., averaged 136.025 kph, totally outclassing the field. The favourite in the race, last year's winner Jacques Bienvenue, of St. Jean Baptiste, finished just seconds ahead of Schmidt in eighth place in a Scirocco. In practise on Friday, Schmidt registered the seventh best time overall on the very challenging course. Gunther Schmidt would like to thank his sponsors for their support during his very successful 1986 campaign; Mitutoyo Measur- ing Instruments, Greenbelt Motors, Garms MufflerWorld, and Budget Rent-a-Truck. way mufflercentre SCORE BOARD -- Penetang Midland Touch Football Sun., Oct. 5 Results: 6 Giants vs Hawks 18 14 Illusions vs Redskins 21 20 Outlaws vs Destroyers 6 22 Flyers vs Toros 6 ' 0 OPSEU vs Strikers 28 28 Eagles vs Mick B's 0 Future Games: Sun., Oct. 12 Outlaws vs OPSEU 11 a.m. MSS Mick B's vs Giants 12:30 p.m. MSS Illusions vs Strikers 2 p.m. MSS Destroyers vs Toros 11 a.m. PSS Hawks vs Flyers 12:30 p.m. PSS Redskins vs Eagles 2 p.m. PSS Leading Scorers: Pts Morris Robitaille, OPSEU 50 John Koppenol, Eagles 47 Rick Dorion, Hawks 42 Chris Wright, Redskins 24 Ray Gadlouray, OPSEU 24 Roy Freer, Destroyers 22 Rick Presse, Redskins 22 John Pickett, Eagles 22 Ernie Desroches, Eagles 20 Glen Howard, Flyers 20 Pete Decourcy, Toros A 14 Mike Edwards, Strikers 13 Morris Pauze, Illusions 12 Karl McAllen, Toros 12 Frank Pauze, Illusions 12 Dave Robillard, OPSEU 12 Carry Boyce, McBee's 12 B.F.
