Club looks for student For the first time since its inception five years ago, the Penetanguishene Rotary Club will be par- ticipating in their Interna- tional Youth Exchange program. Club officials will soon be faced with the difficult task of selecting the club's first exchange student. The individual chosen will begin their year exchange next August. According to the Direc- tor of International Ser- vices Robert Cummings, it is an opportunity of a lifetime for students bet- ween the ages of 15 and 17 to travel Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, Finland, Holland, Japan, New Zealand, Sweden, Thailand or West Germany. Cummings has made presentations at both of the high schools in the Town, and from application forms those interested filled out, a committee will try to choose an appropriate representative for the local club. The International Youth Exchange Program is a reciprocating one, where a rotary club may send one local student on exchange, for each foreign student it accepts. Penetanguishene's first visiting exchange student, Effren Rayo Torres of Mexico, returned home in August after a year's visit to the Town. At a presentation to Ecole Secondaire Le Caron students Friday morning, Cummings explained the many benefits of the excursion. Although the club does not cover the student's air- fare to their chosen destination, Cummings said it is still a deal with most airlines offering special student fares. The Penetang club will be responsible for all medical bills incurred during the year. As part of the deal, the travelling student will receive a monthly allowance of about $100 from the Rotary Club in the town or city they are visiting. Once at their destination the Penetang represen- tative will be billoted at the home of one or more Rotary members for the year. The individuals are also required to attend school in the exchange country. - As well as studying in another country for one year and Aiving in the homes of students of foreign country, students will have the opportunity to learn the habits and family conditions of other countries, while meeting with many foreign groups. Cummings explained with all the paperwork necessary for the trip, in- cluding applying for a stu- dent visa, it takes a year to prepare for the exchange. Deadline for the applica- tions is Sept. 30.
