Remembering the fallen in past wars For as long as there have been War casualties, there have been ways of remembering them. Our present-day Remembrance Day services represent one variation of this very old custom. November 11 took on the special significance it has today when the hostilities of the First World War ceased at 11:00 a.m. on November 11, 1918 1919 marked the first obser- vance of what has become an 'international day of Remembrance. In Canada, November 11, Remembrance Day, has long been set aside as a Statutory Holiday, so that Canadians can remember and mourn those who died and those who served in the Armed Forces in the First and Second World Wars and the Korean conflict. Poppy Our Annual Poppy Cam- paign held on the Saturday preceeding November 11th The opportunity for every Canadian to show that they care and remember, by wearing a ""Poppy". The only National Ap- peal by our organization to the general public for funds. All proceeds are placed in trust accounts and after expenses, including the cost of poppies and wreaths are paid, the funds are used to assist Canadian ex-service personnel and their dependants in necessitous countries and of Allied countries resident in Canada. Some of the funds may be used for the following purposes: Community medical ap- pliances and medical research. Day care centres, meals on wheels, transportation and related services for veterans, their dependants and the aged. Donations for relief of disasters declared by the Federal and Provincial Governments. « Although national in scope, each unit of the Legion is responsible for conducting its own cam- paign, collecting and disbursing the funds col- lected in its own area. Ladies auxillary Membership is open to any woman of good character whose services were terminated under conditions other than dishonourable; or a woman of good character who is the wife, widow, mother, sister, daughter or grand- daughter (who has attained the age of majority) of any person whose services were terminated under conditions other than dishonourable.
