Police chaperones at street dance A minimum of two off- duty police officers should be present at street dances, the Midland public safety committee has been advised. The committee received a report on the street dance of Aug. 15. That event end- ed in struggles between police and young people. A number of charges were laid. The police department made two other recom- mendations: a dance's sponsor should arrange for an adequate number of adult chaperones, and the area in which the dance is being held should be fenc- ed, to assist police in con- trolling access. The issue will be con- sidered again by the com- mittee at its next meeting. Two of the committee's members were absent last Thursday. Chairman Alderman Buzz Brown said he thinks the recommendations are reasonable. Brown would like the sponsors of street dances to be heard from, as well as the police department. Off-duty police officers in Midland attend events for $20 an hour. Legion Gala Ball A Diamond Jubilee Gala Ball is being hosted by Royal Canadian Legion Branch 80, Midland, on Sept. 13.
