Li Junior Achievers Hans Whitt, left, president and general manager of Ernst Leitz in Midland gave a short lesson on Canadian Business to two Junior Achievers that are scheduled to attend the Canadian Junior Achieve- ment Conference at Wilfrid Laurier University. Next to Whitt is Craig Flint and Andrew Flint the two delegates and member of JA, Tom Mulroy. Junior Achievers to attend conference Three members of the Midland Junior Achieve- ment have been chosen to represent the Town at the annual Business and Youth Conference in Kitchen- Waterloo between August 17 and 23. Craig Flint, Mike Mor- rison and Andrew Flint, all members of the local Junior Achievement will leave for the conference on the 17th in order to expand business learning by get- ting involved with business people. The three are part of the only 180 delegates to attend the conference, out of almost 9,000 par- ticipants in the JA program across Canada. The conference, titled 'CANJAC' (Canadian Junior Achievement Con- ference), will expose the delegates to the operations of the corporations, through this year's theme "Understanding Canadian Business." CANJAC is an educa- tional experience that will involve the dynamics of planning, organizing and management. The delegates will be there to sell JA as well. In an effort to prepare the delegates for the con- ferenece a meeting was held with president of Ernst Leitz of Midland, Hans Whitt. Whitt prepared Andrew and Craig Flint for the con- ference by talking about the 'ins and outs" of Cana- dian business. He talked about the pro- cess of starting and main- taining a _ successfull business in Canada and the importance of com- petiveness in any business person. Whitt discussed everything from financing a product, to marketing and hiring staff at the hour and a half long meeting. He stressed the advan- tages of co-op programs of- fered by numerous colleges and universities across the province. Whitt stressed the impor- tance of management to the delegates citing "it is more important to have a good manager than a good product. There are a lot of bad products on the market that sell because of good marketing." He added that in order for a company to survive, it needs finacial backing. Whitt said credit is an essential part of most businesses. "It doesn't matter how much in debt you are as long as you keep up your installments," he said. He told the young delegates that in order for a manager to survive they need to be "very com- petitive." "A non-competitive per- son would not survive in YOUNG DRIVERS MIDLAND OF CANADA PENETANG fi COURSE DATES Evening Course Starts Sept. 9 the Canadian business world."
